Steam: News

Sh*tshow, incoming.
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/08/valve-seems-to-be-working-on-tools-to-get-windows-games-running-on-linux/
https://github.com/SteamDatabase/SteamTracking/blame/6cb3db9ac4cb1f7d0bf218721f4e6f2d173c5b9b/ClientExtracted/public/steamui_english.txt#L4375

  • First things third, this is not new and has been in the works since at least January.
  • I’m not saying this is something that should have launched /w Steam machines but this is totally something that should have launched with Steam Machines.
    • Timing may have been a factor with this one.
      • Timing?
      • You mean the part where they released them two years early?
        • More like 4. Gotta line that shit up to beat the console releases
    • DKVK wasn’t anywhere close to where it is now on the SteamOS launch, which enables a significant swath of modern games that would have otherwise been unplayable
  • Developers start targeting the “Compatibility tool:” instead of Linux in 3.. 2..
  • I’m kidding!
  • Developers (smart ones) will avoid this like the plague and for good raisins.
  • Watching Strider learn about it in Discord was, delightful.
  • I really hope to see this be the way to play your old Windows only games without having to set up prefixes for each one.
    • Don’t get me wrong, that’ll still be the case, it’s just that Steam will do it for you.
  • I also look forward to see the new and infuriating ways this will b0rk.
  • …skyrim.
  • These days most devs don’t go out of their way to target stuff unless their IDE has a setting for it
  • Given some of the dev reactions we’ve seen, im Pretty sure most will end up targeting this, if they don’t outright ignore it. Cuz they don’t care!

What does it take?
https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-has-a-hate-group-problem-because-valve-fails-to-enforce-its-own-rules/

  • Politics aside, Valve’s not going to anything regarding this until it gets revealed that a school shooting was organised on their boards
  • Community maintenance is one of those tricky topics with a zillion arguments and counter arguments, but as a business who’s sole demographic is their community it behoves valve to try to retain as many people as possible
  • Only when the bad elements start causing a mass service exodus will we see an actual response

Horse.tv
https://www.pcgamer.com/valve-launches-streaming-website-steamtv/
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/9879g5/steamtv_is_live_and_it_appears_to_be_valves/e4dv6w8/

  • First discord, now twitch.
  • Is this how Steam Broadcasting comes to Linux?
  • We just have to use OBS to stream to Steam.tv?
  • You know, if they leveraged the communities they have, they could make it a really compelling competitor to twitch
    • Let’s see how they fuck it all up!
  • Twitch needs competition but this is like MS trying to get into the mobile market.

A retelling
https://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-echoes

  • No promises it’ll work ootb on the Linuxes.
  • The story of HL1 from the perspective of the GMan.
  • I want it from the perspective of a G-string.

What’s in a name
http://teamcherry.com.au/hollow-knight-gods-glory-is-now-godmaster/

  • Dodging possible trademark infringement is a good idea.
  • August 23rd.

Legend of Moonlighter
https://steamcommunity.com/games/606150/announcements/detail/1692678156008237953

  • Manage a store by day, kill monsters at night
  • Seems to be fairly well received
  • The game split kinda reminds me a bit of actraiser
  • 20 bucks might be a wee steep though
  • The roguelike elements have certainly peaked my interest.
  • Though I’m pretty sure the store management bits will bore me to no end.

New hacks
https://store.steampowered.com/app/716490/EXAPUNKS/

  • Hacking based puzzle game
  • They’re really trying to go for the Hackers aesthetic
  • You get a little not-gameboy you can make and share games for

Crazy Date
https://twitter.com/BlackRiddles/status/1029747654945898496

  • Small team, tight budget and priced to sell.
  • I’m willing to take the Pepsi Challenge.
  • Please let it not completely suck!

Tangle
https://store.steampowered.com/app/837190/TANGLEWOOD/

  • We had that story a few weeks SG about people still making games for the NES.
  • This is the Sega equivalent
  • Comes with a ROM you can play on actual genesis’s.
  • Genesi? Genepod? Genesoxen?
  • It’s Sonic with puzzles.
  • The fox even goes super saiyan at one point.
  • 16-bit furry simulator.

Grave digger
https://store.steampowered.com/app/599140/Graveyard_Keeper/

  • Guaranteed to be more fun than any given Grave digger concert
  • Game, you sold me on the ability to feed rotting human meat to townsfolk

Mind is out
https://steamcommunity.com/games/437630/announcements/detail/1712944354326480328

  • Admiditaly I was curious, but I’m not $30 curious.

Race the Garden
https://store.steampowered.com/app/576500/Evergarden/

  • Nothing to do with the anime and the anime is the only thing you find when you google for Evergarden.

News:

WINE-O Vulkan
https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases/tag/v0.70

  • The big thing in this release is per-app config file support
  • Probably really handy for Striber
    • Probably handy for VALVe to distribute games with… Speculation!!1!
  • Support for D10 API.
  • Custom winetricks.
    • Running winetricks dxvk on a prefix just sets it up. That’s awesome!

Vulkan all the things
https://github.com/GabrielMajeri/d3d9-to-11

  • Implemented dx9 functions in dx11 so dxvk and run them in vulkan
    • Xzibit.gif
  • Not sure if I understand the rationale behind it, but if it works it works
    • Getting d3d9 games working with Vulkan might alleviate some processor bottleneck.

Mr.
https://gamejolt.com/games/glassball/346543

  • Unity 4 game
  • Gotta chmod +x it
  • Drive around, avoid explosions, get coins.
  • Thankfully it’s free

Open Blupi
http://www.blupi.org/
https://github.com/blupi-games/planetblupi-dev

  • I would like someone to get Buzzing Cars working on Linux, please!

Open-ig
https://github.com/akarnokd/open-ig

  • Take note SC2k team
  • These folks got permission from the publishers and developers to include game assets and code
  • It’s java based, but don’t hold it against them
  • The link on their github wiki to the wikipedia page for the original game has one to many a’s

Blink
https://github.com/Askannz/msi-perkeyrgb

  • If you bought one of those OS-less MSI laptops to use with the Linuxes, now you can have full control over the yolo RGB keyboard from a single tool.
  • Unless you bought one of the models where the keyboard can only do region-based backlight.
  • This is for the true YOLO, per key rainbow barfiness!
  • Nothing a bottle of black paint can’t fix.

Fun section:

Fun?:

  • Venn:
    • Turn based, DIAF.
    • Thought the the simultaneous turns thing would be kinda neat, nope.
    • It’s simplified to the point where I knew what to do.
    • Casual TBS.
    • Not ugly, simple to pick up, priced to sell.
    • If this genre is not your business don’t expect this to be the one that changes you mind.
  • Jordan
    • This game is a wee convoluted
    • You can only move one unit per turn
    • Each unit has a passive ability it does each turn anyways, such as moving, shooting, etc
    • Each player inputs their shit at the same time, so you can bluff and predict, sort of
    • The most effective strategy I found was try and hold the center for a long as possible and failing that, stall until enough people have rezzed that you can just send a dude through
    • Honestly, I’d like to see more characters with varied strategies. There are just a bunch of heroes who just aren’t good
    • OF course, this is all against the AI
    • Nobody’s playing this
    • I like the turn based strategy aspect, but that’s about it
  • Pedro
    • The biggest problem with this online tactical duel game, it’s that no one else is playing it.
    • And the reason no one is playing it is because there’s one winning strategy, it’s not about tactics it’s about picking the winning team and not deviating from that formation.
    • At least, that’s what the AI can do.
    • There’s no way to tell if it’d be different against other players because there’s no one else.
    • But it is unlikely it would be much different.
    • The game has had no updates since May, there’s no meta-shift to keep things interesting, there’s nothing.
    • And that is unfortunate!
    • Because it’s a vicious cycle of nope, now.
    • The devs won’t update the game because no one is playing it. Players won’t return to the game because it’s not getting updated. Rinse, repeat!
