Steam Blog

  • Q: Why do you KEEP asking my damn age throughout the store?”
    • Wait. That’s your excuse for asking my age every, single, time?
    • Also, language.
  • Unless I’m missing something you only need to know my age once to flip a switch.
    • Yeah, but how old ARE you?
    • You do kinda got the Keanu reeves thing going.
  • Removing “Troll” games but the down-right low effort asset flip shite is more than welcome to stay.
  • That’s all well and good but if the OS filter is anything to go by, these other filters will not work.
  • I’ve had the Linux only box ticked since day one and every single week I get recommended Windows only games.
  • Not even going to mention the full page ads for big new AAA releases, but the smaller boxes where the recommended games would show up.
  • I hope that hardline stance you’re taking with the sexy content bleeds into the other filters as well!
  • What this basically confirms to developers is that you’re going to have to get your name out there some other way, cuz steam sure as hell ain’t gonna do it for you.

Zero sum

  • I have some issues with Richard’s thinking here. I could be wrong, but here’s the hot Cwang take
    • Requiring people to pay for cards and not being able to earn them in game will severely hamper free players.
    • No amount of well wishing will fix it
    • Games like these get picked apart the second they come out.
    • Within a few months of the base set coming out, the game will be broken and the dominant strategies and decks will be cemented.
    • If you’re lucky to start off with a few copies of the lynchpin cards, you’re OK, but everyone else will be forced to pay up in order to not get curbstomped 24/7
      • That’s fine, this is how ccgs work and make their money
      • But unless you’ve made the most meticulously engineered and balanced game, you’re going to scare off a huge player base that might eventually capitulate and buy packs.
      • And unless all you want to attract are the whales, you’re not going to have a competitive product.
  • Meh, wake me up when VALVe start making games again.
  • Or at least a HL3 walking simulator.
  • As someone who played a lot of MtG and a lot of Hearthstone, I’ve experienced exactly what pay to win is in this situation.
  • In these card games, it’s not pay to win as much as it is pay to stay in the game.
  • Pay to be able to even compete at any level.
  • You can say “But that’s how the genre goes” and you’re right.
  • But just because that’s how it’s been all these years, doesn’t mean they can’t try to improve it.
  • Having Mr. MtG himself help create a digital TCG makes me want to play it, but it doesn’t make me like it.
  • Right now and after reading these statements, it’s making me wonder whether I could afford to learn and be relevant in this game or if my money and time are better spent somewhere else.

Steam: Game Updates

Raising the bar

  • A redux of the cancelled mod from August 2016. Utilising content from developer repositories and some originally created parts, Half Life 2
  • Weapons / Underground revamps.
  • Animation updates.
  • There’s a lot of half-life mods out there at this stage.
  • It needs a bit moar than just the tech demo!

Oh Tannenberg

  • Better and more accurate stabbing
  • Also cuz historical accuracy is a concern for these guys, the Romanian uniforms have been updated to use the correct colours
    • Apparently some reenactment groups helped out. That’s some good community involvement
  • Hyper realistic WWI shooter? It could be awesome or it could be ARMA.

CRAZY Vulkan

  • Not going to lie, though they might just abandon the project.
  • They used the word “vulkan” twice and spelled it wrong once. Wat
    • They like Vukland.
  • I want it to be good.
  • I want them to not fuck it up before the official release.
  • Unrealistic expectations in today’s world, I know. But I want these things!

The Free Ones DEMO

  • Quick mention since the game now includes a demo.
  • Manages a whopping 30 @ 1080.
  • Holds 50 until you grapple too close to the object, then it dives to the 30s.

Steam: Game Updates

BattleCON: Online

  • Its a PC adaptation of an already existing CCG
  • You can buy cards in game, but will they put the screws to artifact and let you earn dem carboards?
  • Free to play is good!

Life is Strange: Before The Proton

  • It’s going to be interesting to see how this is handled.
  • The game already works with Proton so I’m guessing Steam will switch over to the native version.
  • Steam needs to make an option to toggle between runtimes sooner than later.
    • In the future there could be instances of games performing better /w the Proton tech.
    • Or as Jordan pointed out people might be willing to take a performance hit if it means they can take advantage of online multiplayer.
  • No matter how you julienne it Proton will have an effect on Ferals business model.
  • Especially if their 1+ year turnaround stays in place.
  • Double so if they keep up with the guess what game we’re working on shtick.
    • If people are going to hold out buying something they are going to need to know way in advance from now on.
  • Also, never pre-order digital goods.
  • Pre-orders give babby penguins the cancer.

Fantasy Strike

  • Now makes /w the Linux.
  • Richard sent over some keys and in so proved reading comprehension is not a completely dead skill.
  • Hey, online multi.
  • Accessible fighting game is an interesting proposition
  • What’s more is that apparently you can play it with a guitar hero controller
  • Reminds me a bit of samurai showdown in terms of looks
  • Head up, it’s a 5GB download took almost a full minute.
  • Hold down two buttons on the menu to get the prompt for controller configuration.
    • That and correct prompts for the Steam /Xclone controllers need to be sorted ASAP.
  • Holy hell this thing is well done… was not expecting that.

News:

Humble Unity

  • Couple of solid titles in the $1 teir.
  • The humble “forgot to click export” bundle
    • The bright side is most of these will run fine under proton
  • 15 bucks for torment is a decent deal too considering it retails for 45
  • Lot’s of pricey asset packs, if you’re next in line for an asset flip release on Steam.

Lupis 0.4.19

  • The easiest way to install dxvk now pulls it directly from git and enables their DX10 stuff
    • Finally we can run halo 2 on linux
  • Xephyr still stands Lutris appart from Proton.
  • Playing them really old games!

DXVK

  • Radeon users rejoice. Better support for git mesa has arrived
  • Multi-gpu users rejoice! You can now specify your vulkan device via an environment variable
  • I hope Proton brings these improvements to the Steam masses soon.
  • My SteamBox will appreciate it.

SLAYER

  • That almost looked good enough to make me go through the PITA of setting up DOOM.
  • For a DOOM 2 mod, this looks kinda awesome.
  • Apparently the price of awesome is being able to bring modern systems to a crawl.

Party Tux 0.1

  • Still wicked-primitive but progress is progress.
  • I do like how everyone gets a zip but linux.
  • Good jerb!

PiWheel

  • Configure logitech steering wheels for Linux
  • Still very early alpha, so expect bugs
  • Wonder if anyone with one of the compatible wheels would be willing to take it for a…spin?
  • That is one of the limitations people have pointed out with the DiRT and GRiD Autosquirt Linux releases.
  • Hopefully, Feral is paying attention.

Fun section:

Fun?:

  • Venn:
    • First impression: This looks really nice.
    • Second impression: Oh we’re stuck on this Fox thingy, it better look nice.
    • Third: The hell am I doing?
    • You have some little plants, some big plants. I’m guessing they are plants?
    • The goal is to spread seed, grow new plants, combine plants into bigger plants and profit #plants.
    • Sometimes the fox says line that grow up, yo.
    • If you do you get, you guessed it, more plant.
    • I passed the time by pretending I was growing opium and the Fox was the cartel boss.
    • The random animals that showed up were the DEA.
    • I may have issues.
    • It’s the classic easy to play hard to master formula.
    • It would be nice it the game did something to signal progression.
    • Had optional timers between grows to introduce some urgency.
    • Swap out the background tiles a bit more frequently #signalprogresstion
    • Allow me to rename the Fox to Carlos.
    • Had a mobile version because during my QA session I was constantly thinking I could be doing something elks while still playing Evergarden.
    • Ultimately I like it for what it is, a clicker puzzle game thingy.
    • Unfortunately a $17.99 ask for a puzzle game in 2018 is nigh impossible.
    • Especially one designed for 5 minute-at-a-time interactions.
    • Give me a mobile version, price it to sell and I will pick it up.
  • Jordan
    • Not to be deterred, I went to the backup ubuntu mate partition and the game worked
    • And you know what, I actually like the game
    • Really requires you to apply some math, which you then screw up when you realize what you did
    • The sticky control screwed me a little, cuz you have to click again to deselect something
    • Getting triangles is the name of the game, which lets you unlock songs that can upgrade plants or get rid of armadildos
    • I liked it well enough to accidentally sink a couple hours into it, and if that’s not the mark of a good puzzle game I don’t know what is
    • Venn’s right though, it’s pretty fuckin’ pricey for what you actually get
  • Pedro
    • It’s a puzzle where you unlock these little triangle things and use them to make progress.
    • It’s actually a perfectly good puzzle game.
    • But if it sounds like there’s a but coming, oh yeah! There’s a but coming.
    • And it’s not a terrible warty butt
    • Just a plain repetitive butt.
    • The puzzle is always the same.
    • Sometimes you get a rabbit, sometimes you get armadillos, sometimes you screw yourself over by making stupid moves.
    • But it’s always the same puzzle.

Hate Mail:

I Use

Crappy games

  • How do you know a game is crappy unless you try it.
  • I remember a little game that had a non-existent playerbase from a development team we never heard of.
  • On the surface it looked like not completely fugly generic platformer #735.
  • That game turned out to be Hollow Knight.
