Alex Kidd was originally going to be a Dragon Ball z but then (iirc) the negotiations broke down, so you're not far off there. I don't think I noticed a tail in the earlier games though. Also, were you using Nvidia proprietary drivers? Seems like there is some driver problems (or lack of optimization) if the gpu is taxing this much.
