Vulkan - foxcow

Hey LGC,

I'd been contemplating a GPU upgrade for a bit now and had been reading great things about AMD cards. Since Pedro for a while and recently Jordan went team red, I decided to give it a shot. I upgraded from a 3080 12 gig to a 7900XT. Mesa was already installed (Fedora 39) so all I had to do was rip out the Nvidia drivers. It has been fantastic. It feels better than the mild upgrade expected (according to Passmark GPU benchmarks).

I am, however, curious if Jordan and Pedro experienced the following. The time required for Vulkan shader compilation has all but disappeared. With the the 3080 12 gig required several minutes for some games (Bauldur's Gate 3, Satisfactory) where as the 7900XT requires far less. I just fired up BG3 after several weeks away and it took about 20 seconds. This seems strange to me since this work is done on the CPU.

Thanks and keep up the excellent work!
