Filth and Lies (Complete)

You were off the mark about Purism and their Librem devices in LWDW.

All their devices are available from ODM catalogs. Their bullshit about bespoke parts is, err, lies. They charge 300% markup. Their devices are not compatible with the mainline Linux kernel. I know. I co-authored the BYD trackpad driver in the Librem 13. Their backers are 18 months behind getting their first crowd funded device.

The equipment spec backers are recieving is not what they "ordered" in many cases. Lower specs. The was a branding promise. So things like the windows key would carry a Purism logo. They shipped with a blank windows key. Although it was actually a Windows key with the logo carefully scratched off.

Some devices ship with Bluetooth devices that have no Linux support whatsoever. The Librem 10 photos have black electrical tape covering up the ODM logo etched in the glass. I haven't worked out if the electrical tape is a cost option yet.

Todd Weaver claims he was at the production facility in China to inspect manufacturing progress. Lies. He never visited. I know this because I have a relationship with the ODM behind all the Librem models, due to my work with Entroware. And through that work we had need firmware modifications to properly support power and fan management under Linux. Purism have never requested Linux specific firmware. Consequently on some models the fab runs at 100% constantly.

Purism origininally claimed they would completely free EFI/BIOS from proprietary blobs. Anyone who has worked with modern Intel CPUs called bullshit on that. Because Google, via ChromeOS, couldn't get Intel to open up IME so what chance would Purism have? Purism kept up this pretense for a year. Before silently dropping that objective from their agenga/manifesto. So they ship with just the same "blobbed up" hardware as everyone else.

PureOS is Debian and Cinnamon. Or GNOME3 on the tablets. Their privacy respecting browser is Firefox (rebranded) with some extensions such as Privacy Badger pre-installed.

Purism have over 1 million dollars in crowd funding but have failed to deliver what they were selling.
