Curator connect
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/curators
http://store.steampowered.com/curator/6856357-Linux-Gamecast-Weekly/

  • They do let you send multiple copies to curators. That was surprising.
    • Is there a place to put some BIG HONKING TEXT about key requirements?
  • Still we’ve already been sent 3 games, and only 1 copy of each.
  • We also have some stats on our “influence” to drive game page views. No sales numbers.
  • We need to make sure to include a link to our Steam curator page in any and all emails sent to devel from now on.

Valve makes games?
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/12/valve-announces-the-return-of-portal-via-bridge-constructor/

  • Hopefully this’ll be a little more than bridge constructor with portals.
  • Otherwise it’s gonna be a pretty hard sell.
  • That trailer does not make a bit of FSM damned sense.

Steam off the Bitcoin
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/12/steam-drops-bitcoin-payment-option-citing-fees-and-volatility/

  • Honestly, I think VALVe was jelly about another party getting a cut.
  • Granted, transaction fees are getting a wee out of control.
    • Also the power requirements are approaching ZPM level
  • I would expect other stores to consider doing the same.
  • Somehow, this is good for Bitcoin.

A Linux Wish
http://steamcommunity.com/games/221410/announcements/detail/1475356649450732547

  • If you don’t already have SteamOS+Linux set as a filter now is the time.
  • It will let developers know you not only want the game, but you want it on the Linux.
  • I’d be interested to see what the actual statistics provided to devs would be.
  • The steam hardware survey doesn’t really represent an accurate snapshot of linux usage
  • This is also good targeted data for game devs
  • I’d like to propose a little exercise, not just to our audience but to the Linux gaming community in general:
    • Set your preferences to Linux+SteamOS only (which you should already have done).
    • Go and wishlist all the games you want to see come out on Linux.
    • Then let’s wait and see what what kind of impact this actually makes.
      • I have a sneaking suspicion this’ll just result in these games getting bought for some folks by do gooder friendos
  • The cynic in me says it won’t have any but I wouldn’t mind being proven wrong on this one.

Real, shit just got it
http://store.steampowered.com/news/?appids=346010

  • Guess I need to unpack Tipsy Danger.
  • I hope they realize that it’s make-or-break time for this title.
  • This will get picked up and go a bit viral on the Tubes and Twitch but if they think it will buy them another few years in Early Access they are sadly mistaken.

Darkest DLC
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-12-05-darkest-dungeons-next-dlc-expansion-is-the-farm-themed-the-color-of-madness

  • Oh no, here we go again!
  • More lovecraftian goodness, new quest types and new gear
  • Looks like if I ever pick up a switch it’ll be a $300 DD and Pokemon machine

Safe SOMA
https://linuxgameconsortium.com/linux-gaming-news/soma-sci-fi-horror-game-launches-safe-mode-ubuntu-linux-games-60799/

  • Well the Workshop MOD has been around for over a year.
  • You thought SOMA was already boring?
  • Yeah, take out the boogie monsters.
  • To be fair, the monsters don’t really contribute much to the gameplay. Just stuff you have to avoid and really more of a nuisance
    • ^
  • I’m with Jordan on the on the whole monster nuisance thing.
  • It was, ironically, Frictional’s own fear of stepping out of their comfort zone which saw SOMA getting monsters in the first place.
  • I still remember the bit in the “vertical boat” with the monsters with glowy heads.
  • And those are not fond memories.

Poly exists Early Access
http://store.steampowered.com/app/368180/Polyball/

  • Apparently you just need an ubuntu live CD, a stick of RAM and a flash drive to run it
  • Finally, a classic ball rolling game.
  • None of that new-wave ball rolling bullsh*t the kids are on about these days.
  • It’s multiplayer so there could be a bit of rage platrolling hidden in there.

Gilf /w friends
http://store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/steam_community_announcements/2152021858910947928

  • Fuck this shit
  • Fuck your level editor
  • Fuck your lighting and fuck your christmas!

Vulkan tweaks
http://steamcommunity.com/games/564310/announcements/detail/1471978589213349287

  • Didn’t notice any difference in the BFE benchmark.
  • Would be nice if they fixed the vulkan herky-jerk on the last level.
  • WOnder if it also fixed some of the vulkan freezes they had in some of the underground levels
  • All I can say though is that we got one more level of Serious Cwang, I’m curious if we can Vulkan our way through it

Corpse party
http://steamcommunity.com/games/CorpseParty/announcements/detail/1453964190589469266

  • Apparently this is a remake/re-imagining of a popular-ish RPG maker game
  • They did a Clue, with different content in the 3DS and PSP versions
  • I played this on the PSP.
  • It was a part of a bunch of games I rented off the local video store after I installed custom firmware on it.

Bad Blood
https://dyinglightgame.com/badblood/

  • Dying light was a bit of alright.
  • PVP could be fun but feels like they want some of the PUBG action.

Empires Of Growth
http://store.steampowered.com/app/463530/Empires_of_the_Undergrowth/

  • Do you want ants? This is how you get ants!
  • You can also apparently steal ant DNA and become the antzerg!

PArk bound
http://store.steampowered.com/app/611830/Park_Bound/

  • Human Fall Flat MMO.
  • Can’t be worse than the last few aftershow bait games that have come out, right?

Yarrrr (beta)
http://steamcommunity.com/games/418180/announcements/detail/1456215673739868228

  • So a prettier windward.
  • It has a kraken.
  • It does look like a more graphically comprehensive Windward from the description.

Open world full of sand and boxes
http://store.steampowered.com/app/655780/Project_5_Sightseer/

  • I’m all for random explorey games with little else to do.
  • But the resource acquisition has to not be a complete grindfest.
  • I think the game that’s done that the best for me was actually Planet Explorers
  • If this can give me some of that, I say bring it!
  • I still won’t play it until it’s out of Early Access, though.

  • R600 is getting a little bit of love, with some GLES extensions

  • Yeah, this seems to be the midpoint between the consumer shit and the Telsa compute cards
  • It’s basically a consumer level Tesla card.
  • Bandwidth has been neutered at only 653 GB/sec due to the 3,072 bit Memory Bus Width compared to 900 GB/sec of the Tesla V100.
  • “poor man’s” Tesla V100 built for AI.
  • The tradeoff is that overall clock speed is higher on the Titan

PPSSPP 1.5 Vulkan

  • I think that does it.
  • All major emulators on Linux now support the Vulkan.
    • But what about gfceu, zsnes and gens? I NEED VULKAN PIXELS!
    • Some of those had Glide rendered in the past.
  • It works and the Vulkan bits make it so you can play with a higher resolution scaling without as big a performance impact as OpenGL had.

Game: Valley
Webzone: http://store.steampowered.com/app/378610/Valley/
Devel: Blue Isle Studios
Engine: Unity
Price: £14.99 / US$19.99 / CA$21.99

Wazzat: Explore the vast and beautiful world of Valley using the power of the L.E.A.F. suit: a fierce exoskeleton that grants exceptional speed and agility along with the phenomenal ability to manipulate the life and death of all living things.

Makes with the working

Venn – CHAIRCHAIR

  • Thar be spite crashes.
  • These happen during level transitions and it bit me twice, HARD.
  • I say hard since there is no real save system so it starts you all the way back at the beginning of the previous zone.
  • Refuses to launch if Vivaldi or Chromium are running.
  • 60/70 @ 1080
  • Mid 30’s @ 2160

Jordan –  CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Thar be inopportune spite crashes
  • Twice after finishing a level, which made me go back and redo it cuz it didn’t finish saving
  • That’s a quick way to get jordan to nope

Pedro – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The only thing that didn’t make with the working for me was the subtitles.
  • It’d show the first line and then be stuck there until the audio-tape was over.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Shiny / Sounds

Venn – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • I like games that prove that Unity can be both performant and pretty.
  • Valley does these things in spades.
  • Both indoor and outdoor areas are wicked smooth.
  • All the environments are coherent.
  • I do wish the main baddies were something, different?
  • They didn’t seem to fit the world.
  • Music is totes outstanding and caught me off guard.
  • You don’t normally get that from an indie game.
  • Voice acting was passable+ in the sense they didn’t go with the lowest bidder.

Jordan – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Oh, it’s very pretty
  • Look what happens when you don’t use stock unity assets!
  • The soundtrack sounds like a Jethro Tull fever dream

Pedro – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It looks very pretty and the music is frickin’ spot on!
  • During the running on the electrified rails sequence, that music alone turned it from just being a bit where you run down a corridor to “OMG!!1! Run faster! Jump! Run fast again! Weeeeeeeeee!”
  • I was smiling like a lunatic throughout the whole thing.
  • Damn was a good set piece!

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Control

Venn – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Tried to play it with the Steamy controlla since it seemed like a nice fit.
  • Unfortunately there was some jank with camera movement.
  • Keyboard and gerbil posed no problems.

Jordan – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Sometimes you get a little too into it and end up overshooting the fuck out of your jumps
  • Really my only gripe with it. Can’t quite tell where you’re gonna land

Pedro – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It’s a first person running/platforming game.
  • Why you’d want to play this with a controller, I don’t know.
  • While physics defying jumps may have made me ding this a chair in other games, in this game it fits.
  • And this game made me wish I could have more controls than casual jog or superhuman sprint for movement.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN?

Venn – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • That was a little shorter than expected but for $5.00 it was an enjoyable romp.
  • If I had paid the iron price ($19.99) I would have been a bit miffed.
  • Storytelling and world building is clearly something these motherfu*ckers know how to do.
  • I honestly thought they were going to pull a gotcha right up until I jumped out of the final tube.
  • I was all “they want me to think the game is over, but it’s not really over”
  • …the game was over.
  • I Venned my way through it in 4 hours.

Jordan – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • 21 Wet, Sticky Maplebucks is a bit of a big ask for this jolly little jaunt
  • The game itself is actually pretty shallow, essentially being 3d straight line platformer
  • That said, it’s execution is spot on
  • The story is actually pretty decent too, all things considered. Sort of a whodunit
  • I usually prefer emergent narratives, but credit where credit is due
  • Crashes added another hour onto the gameplay, and there are hidden goodies you can go collect

Pedro – CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The only reason I can’t give it 4 chairs for the fun is because it’s short.
  • Criminally short!
  • I was having fun! I was having a lot of fun and the game ended.
  • It took my fun away from me.
  • In all seriousness, this is a game with very simple but refined mechanics.
  • They took movement, something you take for granted in all videogames and they improved it.
  • They quadrupled down on exploring exactly what it is that can make videogame movement compelling and built a short experience around it.
  • And they frickin’ nailed it!
  • I can safely say I never had so much fun running and jumping down a corridor for 5 minutes like I did in Valley.
  • This I would say is the perfect example of aesthetics and narrative being used solely to further the mechanics… or mechanic, since they really only had the one.
  • But goddamn, they did it well!
  • If it had come out this year, it’d be a contender for Linux game of the year 2017.

  • Launcher mode. AKA that thing that already worked under linux more or less

PC gaming is dead
https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam/steam-17-million-concurrent

  • So, china?
  • Definitely China and PUBG.

VR still a thing
https://venturebeat.com/2017/11/27/vr-headsets-pass-1-million-shipments-for-the-first-time-in-a-single-quarter/

  • One million headsets, this means PSVR, VIVE and Occulus combined
  • Looks like windows gamers are picking the rift just cuz it’s cheaper
    • Makes sense, it’s not like you are going to continue using it after the novelty wears off.

Steamy RYZEN

  • Also remember that the CPU only recently came out.
  • It’s not like people were chomping at the bit to trash their systems and buy some newsauce
  • Also China. Because China
  • That is a nice linear progression, but in September the FX CPUs were still leading.
  • I was a part of that in September.
  • Almost 1% and it’s not even Doctor WHO day.
  • AMD made multi-core cheap and performant.
  • It also lit a fire under Intel’s arse-organ.
  • I think it was the Star Citizen critters that are starting to test builds on Thread Ripper.

Skybox

  • Optimized CPU performance and memory usage throughout the game because it ran so poorly to begin with.
  • Improved car explosion visual effect.
  • And a new skybox system.
    • If y’all motherfu*kers are reworking the skybox you need to admit that it’s ready for release.
  • This does read like a post launch patch.

Hawt
http://store.steampowered.com/app/674930/Boyfriend_Dungeon

  • Something tells me Fighter from 8 bit theater would b e all over this game
  • This might actually get me interested in a dating sim, if the dungeon crawling is compelling enough
  • “Date your weapons” – I’m sold!
  • I’m with Jordan on my enjoyment of this game being very much attached to the actual dungeoneering.

Dominions 5

  • Have you ever felt other 4Xs weren’t really scratching your hardcore strategy itch?
  • Enter the Dominion series.
  • Do you want thousands of different units, each with their own stats? Hundreds of resources? Tens of management “mini-games” with different impacts on your game?
  • This is it.
  • Dominions 4 was already a massive monster of mechanical complexity, 5 just cranks that up even higher.
  • Just don’t expect Civ level graphics, though.

NVIDIA memory
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/7gm21i/nvidia_vram_bug_affecting_the_380_driver_branch/

  • Apparently this bug was introduced late in the 378 cycle and has to do with memory allocation of textures
  • There is a bug in the nvidia memory manager that they’re expecting to have fixed in 390
    • They will have a workaround for it in 390, but according to Arthur Huillet, they have no fucking clue what’s causing it.
  • Turns out, this exacerbates the 3.5GB VRAM issue in the 970s.
  • Unless you’re strider, at which point you’re now saying: “I have a 970 and don’t see any of this.”
  • Switch between the latest 38*.** version and the old long lived branch while keeping an eye on the VRAM usage and come back to me.
  • I didn’t see any significant performance drops but with Mad Max between the current version and 375, the latest version of the driver uses almost a third more VRAM on the 1080.

Game: The Silver Case
Webzone: The_Silver_Case
Devel: GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE INC.
Engine: Unity
Price: £14.99 / US$ 19.99 / CA$ 21.99

Wazzat: The Silver Case – the debut title from world-renowned developer SUDA51 has been fully remastered and localized to English for the first time ever!

Mandatory Disclosure: The Devs sent keys.

Makes with the working

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The remaster was developed using the Unity 5 game engine
  • The main problem with the port was that the original source code had been lost, so the audio data needed to be extracted from the PlayStation disc version.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • SWEET MOTHER OF LOUD

P-CHAIR

  • The game is downright unplayable in non-english locales
  • If you don’t add LC_ALL=C %command% to the advanced launch options the graphics are pitch black, you can’t load a game and you can’t progress at all.
  • This is <current year argument>
  • This kind of shit was bad enough when it first happened when Unity games started coming out, it’s even worse now.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Remaster?
  • I went back and watched some PS1 gameplay and I think a better definition would be “mildly enhanced”
  • Delicious polygons
  • That said, I like the background music.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • I mean, “HD” remaster in this case just means that all the art assets are HD, which means fewer pixels
  • Otherwise, it kind of reminds me of some Strider-esque neue wave cinema
  • Which, you know, could work for the genre of the game, but the dialogue is super bad
  • Protip: Alternating mental cast members Bill Cosby, Snaggletooth and Frank’n’Furter make this a much more entertaining read

P-CHAIR

  • I almost wish the locale bug made it so I couldn’t hear the sound effects because goddamn, that typing noise is so annoying and loud.
  • Graphics look like something out of the PS1 era.
  • And seeing as this came out in 1999, it probably was.
  • And even then, on the i5 6200U laptop it runs at 10FerPS
  • So it’s horribly unoptimized, on top of just looking like shit.

  • You get a bonus soda for attempting a point-and-click in the PS1 era.
  • You also get smashed in the face-organ with a Chair for keeping that bullsh*t in place.
  • You knew the control scheme was nightmare-fuel back in 1999.
  • Yes, you added a WASD option but getting to it is the problem.
  • Hell, I’ve counted three references to how the controls “might seem confusing” in the game proper.
  • Keyboard is somehow worse.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Very much an early 3d console point and click game ported to PC
  • And yeah, the control scheme is a wee fucked up
  • You do get used to it though. The trick is to just not use a mouse when playing the point and click sections

P-CHAIRCHAIR

  • The controls work.
  • This seems to be the sole thing which did before forcing all locales to C, system-wide.
  • They’re still bad, though.
  • It does the Myst thing of letting you spin in place and move to another square on the map.
  • Not impressed.

FUN

V-CHAIR

  • This is about as much of a “game” as Gone Home: You’re Drunk.
  • It’s a visual novel / walking simulator mixed with the occasional puzzle.
  • The criminal thing is the hot mess of what they claim to be a game interface.
  • I lasted a little over an hour before giving up.

J-CHAIR

  • #bigdickchinchilla
  • This was always supposed to be an experimental game
  • When you have time, resource and budget constraints, sometimes the answer to your problems is to go way the hell out there
  • I never really played any of SUDA51’s other games, so I don’t really have a sense of what makes his sauce super special
  • It does some visually interesting things, which again ties back to the limitations, but it doesn’t really make up for the main deficiency
  • Since this is a text game though, the experience is defined by the text of the game. And hoo boy
  • I get the sense that the dialogue is supposed to be people talking normally, but hot damn. There are some points when people start repeating shit that I thought the game was glitching out
  • I also still have no idea who any of these people talking are

P-CHAIR

  • I think I found my most hated game of 2017.
  • I thought nothing could top spaceBOUND in the “making me violently ill with anger” category, this year.
  • I was wrong.
  • This is the kind of game I hate the most.
  • The mechanics are there solely to make you work for SUDA51’s masturbatory stiffy over his storytelling.
  • The graphics barely even register, since all of the important bits are just glorified JPEGs which get smeared on screen to indicate something is happening.
  • There’s so much text on screen at any point I felt like I’d be better off with audiobook version of this game.
  • If you want to experience this game like I did, the best way would be to watch a let’s play of the original Myst on youtube (without fullscreening) which was recorded in 240×160, mute the audio, have someone tap along on an old digital typewriter right next to your ears and focus on the text below the video.
  • Are you bored yet?

Autumn sale
https://steamdb.info/sales/

  • I sorta (kinda) want Road Redemption so might pick that up if it goes half off.
  • Also, jackbox… if native.
  • Bit the bullet and Grabbed Pyre and Tyranny.

Reviews revisited
http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/2666556941788470579

  • Steam maths will now decide if you found a review helpful.
  • This was when VALVe decided to do something about review bombing and the entire bot farms dedicated to it.
    • I would argue it was the AAA industry trying to prevent ReeeeEEEeeeEEee bombs.
  • The idea behind their review sorting mechanism doesn’t seem to match the stated end goal
  • They’re basing it off of people’s review patterns, which simply just offsets review floods.   Doesn’t really mean anything about quality thereof.   That’d require some natural language processing fuckery that nobody at valve is actually up to

Bad keys
https://twitter.com/blackpantsgames/status/933310248995246080
https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DavidStark/20171106/308982/
http://www.indiegamestand.com/

  • “To be honest, we have no idea what happened to the keys.”
    • That, that right there set off the old bullsh*t detector.
    • Might also be a single malicious actor in the company trying to jump ship
  • Considering most of the titles on IndieGameStand were shovelware and the like I doubt we’ll see any type of lash back from developers.
  • As long as these grey market resellers are around and shit like this pops up, you’re better off still buying the game directly from the developer or on Steam/Humble.

Totes not Slime ranchers
http://store.steampowered.com/app/645530/Raise_The_Dead/

  • Good thing zombies don’t have human rights
  • Looks like a fuck around simulator where you capture zombies and try to figure out the magical ingredient combination that turns them human
  • So the cooking from BoTW, but they made a game out of it.
  • Slime rancher looks fun and really pretty compared to this one.
  • And I didn’t particularly like Slime Rancher, to begin with.

Haque
http://store.steampowered.com/app/662540/Haque/

  • Roguelike classic ultima.   Colour me intrigued
  • Plus apparently you get to murder cute things.  Bonus soda
  • I’m really done with the “retro” aesthetic.

Mega Race 3
http://store.steampowered.com/app/733770/MegaRace_3

  • More PS2 “retro” goodness.
  • MR2 is also available.

Jack4
https://steamdb.info/app/610180/depots/

  • It has a 64-bit depot that according to the Steam forums “kinda works”
  • It’s almost double the size of MAC/WIN depot.
    • Makes me think it contains a copy of the windows binaries
    • Is it a real boy?  Maybe it’s VP

Still on pause?
http://steamcommunity.com/games/307880/announcements/detail/1429182063894681902

  • It’s been four months and not a peep.
  • Then, BAM.
  • Guess I should say BAM since this is a lot of promises and their last update was “we’re working on a new project”
  • At one point I found a way of just getting random bits of equipment which spawned in a specific place of the map.
  • Made it much less grindy, so that’s a plus in my book.

Hammertime
https://www.rocketleague.com/news/adjustments-competitive-matchmaking-bans/

  • Now /w 7 layers of bans, delicious.
  • If you keep doing it once you’re already at the max ban level, they say they will look into your account and possibly ban you from online matches altogether.
    • Moral of this story: if your game likes to spite crash, don’t play competitive.
    • It’s rare to see a spite crash these days but not unheard of.
  • It’s a bit scary knowing there is an entire generation of instant gratification ReeeEEee babbys out there requiring things like this to be implemented.

HL-2 MOD update
http://www.pcgamer.com/half-life-2-work-in-progress-mod-adds-new-weapons-improved-ai-dismemberment-mechanics/

  • Just once I would like one of these MODs to come the FK out.
  • It’s the second time they’ve “come back” to this?
  • This does seem to suffer from the same ailment which hits many mods.
  • Put out some concept art and then stop updating.
  • I can appreciate accurately dismembering someone with the pew pew beam gun from HL
    • Yeah, dismemberment is really the only selling point I’m seeing here.
  • But yeah, maybe releasing a WIP or hosting shit on github would be nice

Saw that coming
http://steamcommunity.com/games/362890/announcements/detail/1453963283488180339

  • And so it continues to be, that these lot won’t get my money until Xen is done.
  • Apparently what they’re doing is a bit of a departure from how the source engine does some stuff, so they’re going to backport their changes to the terrestrial levels for testing to see if they can get them working for the xen levels
    • Do you see where the problem lies in this statement?
  • They’ve added a JJ Abrams mode tho
  • Five damn years and the playerbase is just starting to become restless.
  • They will, however, survive missing this milestone but mark my word-organ.
  • Do it again and Steam’s new review system be damned, Black Mesa will go negative.

Multi-Doors

Drivers
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/127149/en-us

  • As someone who wants a G-sync monitor, those prices are still shit.
  • So I’mma have to take this changelog on its word that there’s some G-sync fixes.
  • Old 600 series video cards should stop hanging in vulkan apps
  • It doesn’t crash my box on 4.13.13.   So that’s a thing
  • Fixed some Vulkan bugs but nothing I was experiencing.
  • Installed it, works.

This is useful
https://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/vulkansupport.php#linux

  • Though by now you should know if any of your hardware has vulkan support, it’s handy if you have an old GPU or lappy handy.
    • Rule of thumb is Haswell and up for Intel, GCN 1.1 for AMD and Kepler for NVidia.

Ctrl+f multiplayer
http://blog.supertuxkart.net/2017/11/supertuxkart-093-released.html

  • Interesting worry about moving to Steam.
  • Is liability on Steam that big a concern?
  • With the unending torrent of shovelware and copyright infringing asset flips we’ve seen, I’d say that’s hardly a concern.

Learning is good
https://dashgl.com/

  • Educational projects like these are nice.  Plus they get people actually working with openGL
  • I question using GTK instead of QT, but what can you do.
  • How about some of that SDL?

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2017/11/20/beamdog-announces-neverwinter-nights-enhanced-edition-for-pc.aspx
http://blog.beamdog.com/2017/11/neverwinter-nights-enhanced-edition.html
http://store.steampowered.com/app/704450/Neverwinter_Nights_Enhanced_Edition/

  • I do wonder about the Multiplayer.
  • It would be nice to get all of those old NWN modules hosted on steam workshop
  • That said, I’m so burned out on 3.0, I have no idea if I could even
  • So their motto with this was to improve and fix bugs without breaking backwards compatibility.
  • The big question is, is this worth the money?
  • If you want to play the premium mods and lost the CD-key to them, yes.
  • If you want to have your multiplayer server be discoverable without having to have people google for it, also yes.
  • You’re expecting it to be this massive improvement of Neverwinter Nights, then no.
  • This week I learned the reason that there won’t be a Icewind Dale 2 Enhanced edition is because nobody can find the source code for it!

Panda curtains
https://www.panda3d.org/blog/a-look-behind-the-curtains/

  • Another free and open source 3D engine.  You can use it with python too
  • They have a barely functional vulkan renderer in place, as well as a webGl one
  • Apparently OPUS support is a new feature as well

Retro
https://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-1-6-8-released/

  • Most of the linux fixes are adding additional ARM support (a good thing)
  • It’ll default to keyboard input when there is not focus
  • More mouse buttons!
  • Gamecube ISOs can now  be read and imported
  • Kiosk mode if you want to set up something resembling a proper arcade cabinet

Glowing
https://glowstone.net/

  • “While Glowstone can be used at its best for lobbies, hubs, minigames and creative servers, it is not ready for survival.”
    • So it’ll work for most stuff except the actual base game… >.>

Makes with the working

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It’s a relatively light game being hipster-pixel and the like.
  • The only slowdown @1080 was some slight when a mill exploded.
  • Like Rocket Cars, but with more mill.
  • Outside of that it ran like a champ.

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Hipster-pixel done right and that’s something we don’t set to say all that often.
  • This was clearly done as a style choice and not because nobody on the tem could fkn draw.
  • It’s colourful and scales well enough.
  • Honestly, I kinda like that they were all, like, FK having any English voice acting .
  • Outside of that not much to report on the background music.
  • It’s there and inoffensive.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The soundtrack is fantastic and fit well with the theme.   Very good orchestration
  • You get a sort of isometric hipster pixel that reminds me a bit of Shattered Lands
  • All the units look distinct and recognizable though
  • The fake mouse russian can get a little annoying at times

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • I’ve definitely seen worse hipster pixel graphics.
  • The background music was certainly there, like Venn said, but nothing to write home about.
  • I did like the sound effects, the screen shaking, and even the limited (read low-res) particle effects.
  • In I wouldn’t go so far as saying this is an awesome game in the aesthetic department, but it is well done.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • If you have a Steamy controlla you’re actually going to have a pretty alright time.
  • It was the first time I felt comfortable playing a RTS while having a lean back experience.
  • Unfortunately having the controls tuned so well for gamepads comes at a cost.
  • That cost, keyboard + gerbil is an odd (borderline bad) experience altogether.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Very simplified RTS controls
  • You are a mousebro who can cause all of the other Kommunist Kritters to come towards you

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • I rather like RTS games that don’t contain the words Total and or War in the title.
  • This love affair started with Dune 2 and continues till this day.
  • Something about resource management + muderating gives me a big ole clue.
  • This fills the part of my brain-organ that is not content unless we’re doing at least two (usually three) things at once.
  • Tooth and tail didn’t really do anything to add to the genre but it got the basics right.
  • And it managed to do something I have never seen done correctly.
  • Allow for a fun sitback experience while maintaining the mild chaos and action needed to keep me occupied… with a controlla #neat
  • If I had to complain about something it would be the story. Honestly, didn’t give a singular FK.
  • This led to my playtime being in spurts since I would nope a stage and derp right off and do something else.
  • Also, I could understand any arguments about Tooth and tail being a weee oversimplified.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • I don’t say this very often about strategy games, but it could be a little more complicated
  • I get why the devs made the gameplay choices they did, but I feel that the unit management could be a little more nuanced than select which type of dudes you want to advance
  • It kind of reminds me a bit of the RTS moments from brutal legend, except you can’t fight.   Only Kritter kan fight
  • The use of food as a constantly variable resource is an interesting take, but it can get a little confusing at time
  • All in all, I didn’t really hate it.   It’s simple enough for pick up and play, but it lacks any real sense of depth

P-CHAIR

  • I get what they tried to do.
  • To bring an RTS to a simpler control scheme like a controller.
  • I guess it must be working because I still don’t like it.
  • There’s less of a concern with resource management since you only have one resource, food.
  • There’s a limited number of units you can have per mission, which I guess is necessary when you’re trying to boil down an RTS to the couch experience.
  • I can see most of what they did to bring a strategy game to the console crowd and I commend them for it.
  • They must have an awesome job because I feel about Tooth and Tail, the exact same way I felt about most previous RTS games we’ve thrown chairs at.

Unofficial Steam sale
http://www.pcgamer.com/steams-new-currency-supports-causes-chaos-for-international-pc-gamers/

  • It would be nice if this problem could be solved by, I don’t know, setting a static price in USD for a game and then converting appropriately.
  • I get that in some places such a solution isn’t feasible because not everything is valued the same in USD as it is in other countries. But it’s a goddamn start!
  • Not surprising that some publishers have already jacked their prices up to “compensate”
  • It’s amazing how VALVe keeps cocking up even while they’re trying to do the right thing.

  • In other breaking news, letting go of something from a height will cause it to accelerate towards the ground
  • There’s been so much hipster pixel trash and shovelware it’s actually disheartening to check the new releases every day.
  • Steam Direct accelerated the influx of bullshit allowing Steam to rubber stamp everything.
  • That, and Unity is getting too easy to use.
  • Do keep in mind a lot of the “shovelware” is not malicious.
  • It’s teens using a free engine and burning $100 of allowance monies to say they have a game on the Steam.
  • I would have done the same shite back in the day.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/633460/Tannenberg/

  • Does this really justify a new game?
  • I mean, this really should be a mission pack for Verdun.
  • That said, both games seem to have a legitimate fan base.
  • This one is still multiplayer only.
  • As someone who fondly remembers Medal of Honor Allied Assault, and don’t get me wrong I love the multiplayer on that too, I’d like to see a nice single player campaign.

Trust
http://blog.counter-strike.net/index.php/the-trust-factor/

  • The continuing saga of VALVe trying to automate things without the in-house talent required to do it properly.
    • In most situations, I’d agree.
  • Here, though, this is literally happening on the go as you queue up for a match.
  • It’s unfeasible to expect them to hire thousands of people to manage these.
  • That said, I do wonder just how your Steam lib2rary and your gaming habits affect the matchmaking.
  • Say you’re a youtuber like Jim Sterling who plays a lot of shovelware, are you going to be matched up against other shovelware players and everyone gets to commiserate together?

    • It’s like they are doing you a favour.

    AMD don’t seem
to think the accuracy and revalidation of the code is worth the effort
    ”.
  • Dave is worried that if the code is left out much longer (4.15) distros will start carrying the code.
  • Dave is correct.
  • The backstory he provides is an interesting glimpse at their efforts to getting AMD to pull a Summer and have a Linux-friendly unified codebase for the hardware, to render things before the display server loads.
  • He says it’s not there yet, hence the whole spiel about having bits Linus may ding.

  • It’s a little less sophisticated than the pi “switch”, but it’ll get the job done, but if you need a tiny arcade box and don’t have a 3d printer, this’ll certainly get the job done
  • Doesn’t look anywhere near as sketchy as something our resident Tanzanian representative would do.
  • And you can slap android on it for media consumption.

Makes with the working

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • So far I have experienced 0 fuckery and that’s a rarity in the land of Unity.
  • 80/90 @1080p and 30’ish @ 2160p.
  • This is with everything maxed the hell out.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Graphically it looks next-gen compared to the original Hand of Fate.
  • However, the original looked a bit jank so set your expectations accordingly.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Certainty an improvement over the first one
  • The David Warner-ass narrator certainly sounds super shitty when the RNG fucks you over

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • There’s some z-fighting with some of the card textures which causes that weird flickering effect.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • So, do we have any real camera control or is it just me?
  • Block and roll can become a tad unresponsive, Brad.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The game seems to really not want you to button mash. Everything has a wind up animation and you gotta wait for it to finish before the next thing happens
  • Means that block and rolls never seem to land when you want them to
  • Takes some getting used to but every once in a while it still fucks you
  • Also, no correct prompts on the dual shock

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Nope, no camera movement still.
  • I figured out why sometimes your character doesn’t do what you’re telling it to even if you’re smacking the button.
  • It queues up actions as you press buttons.
  • That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just the cut off point in the queue and which actions are queued or done instantly that feel arbitrary at points.
  • I guess this is to prevent button mashing but it doesn’t work as well as you’d expect.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN

VCHAIRCHAIR

  • I really really don’t like losing my equipment after each level.
  • They didn’t go full Arkam Knight with the combat system.
  • Once you figure out how to roll spam the battles become tedious and unchallenging.
  • FFS let me skip the dude talking bits.
  • Yeah, FK this RNG bullshit.
  • It’s not a bad indie game it’s just a bad genre.
  • For HOF3 they really need to bring in someone who understands what makes combat good.
  • Straight-up hack n slash is fun for a few minutes but without any depth it quickly becomes a chore.
  • Combos, attack progression and AI that acts less like sheep is a must.
  • Soooooo close guys… so, damn, close.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • They’ve certainly gone back and done some changes
  • I like how they’ve varied up the type of missions. It’s cool to see the same core mechanic recontextualized to create some very different experiences
  • Hell, they’ve even addressed some of the complaints we had with combat. Some, but not all
  • As Pedro mentioned, that action queuing thing gets real annoying. Your weapon helps determine how badly you’ll get screwed by it, but the differences are pretty superficial
  • They’ve also added a lot more card synergy
  • I’m not sure I feel about the fame mechanic. It’s already a crapshoot whether or not you get the equipment you put in your deck, this just makes you wait longer. I guess it’s to stop you from breezing through some of the early challenges
  • Regardless, the short missions means that you can pick up and play this game and have some decent fun doing it.
  • Good jerb guys

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Much like the first one, I liked it.
  • It’s like they took all of what made Hand of Fate what it was and expanded on it.
  • There are more minigames, there is a much bigger variety in mechanics and they even expanded the deck building aspect.
  • Now you get more weapon types, a companion, bigger map variety (there’s even some more openish type of maps) and the combat even feels a lot better.
  • It’s still not perfect.
  • The texture flickering and control queue make sure of that but, much like last time, I really enjoyed this one.
  • It’s a roguelite with real time-ish combat.

  • Precompiled Vulkan shaders.
  • One measly Linux fix and it’s possibly the least disruptive issue that they fixed.
  • They really have stopped giving a shit.
  • You can now steam-controllify your arcade sticks. But whar DDR pads!
  • Thirdparty xbox controllers can now work with steam-input too
  • One feature I’d really like to see is the steam input configurator available from the overlay when not in big picture mode. Would be handy when you’re fine tuning your configs

Alien Steam
http://store.steampowered.com/app/629540/Alien_Arena_Warriors_Of_Mars/

  • I don’t really feel like paying any money for another quake 3 engine based, first person arena shooter.
  • That said, this one does look good.
  • What exactly are we getting for $9.99 vs the free version?

Hitman GOLD|
http://store.steampowered.com/app/236870/HITMAN/

  • Ya know, I understand why people who picked up the “FULL EXPERIENCE” are a bit miffed.
  • Still runs like poo.
  • Not necessarily a lot of value add if you already own Hitman

Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE

  • “basically the same game but the devs just ticked a magical checkbox for VR”
    • Lulz
  • Will work with players on Fusion. So I want to see empty in this mode one thursday
    • With a camera on him in meatspace
  • Added dual wielding and teleportation. I’m honestly not sure how this’ll affect game balance

Manos 2
http://store.steampowered.com/app/456670/Hand_of_Fate_2/?newsId=34382

  • They’ve added a bunch more mission types, more cards and supposedly tightened up the combat system
    • Monotonous combat was our number one complaint with the first one so hopefully they stepped up their (Card) game
    • The combat looks better and that’s the only thing about the game the interests me so might be worth a look.
  • Since we’re not getting Batman anytime soon, you’re stuck with this and Hodor if you want that style of beat’em up
  • Beating the first one was a bitch and afterwards the game told me I could now play infinity mode, without any restrictions on the cards.
  • I really liked everything outside of the combat on the first game, so improving combat is probably gonna put this one up as a contender for game of the year.

LSI 0.6 & Runtime Snaps

https://github.com/solus-project/runtime-snaps/blob/master/README.md
https://plus.google.com/collection/cfqHX

  • The one really cool feature I like in this release is being able to swap out SSL libraries for LibreSSL and use a nonvendored Libcurl
    • I need mah FIPS, but the ancient version of openSSL that a lot of games are using for no reason these days does need to be taken out back and shot. This is a reasonable alternative
  • It also writes settings on close. Which could trip some people up
  • They also include the snap with the runtime, client and the LSI.
  • Which aims to fix all the library cock ups which have slowly crept up with games not working, the open sauce driver issues and some of client functionality issues.
  • If that snap becomes officially supported, it’ll get rid of most issues with getting Steam to run outside of Ubuntu.

Pay $10 or more for Skylines Bundle
https://www.humblebundle.com/strategy-sim-bundle

  • Plague inc isn’t terrible, but this seems like a whole whack of shovelware
  • Nothing in there I really want and $10 is more than want for a simulation game.
  • This is a safe one to pass up, in my opinion.

Why bundle, why?
http://gonewiththewin.com/why-humble-bundle-sold-out-itself-and-over-100-million-customers/

  • The advertising data thing is something I never really considered, but it does make a degree of sense
  • Basically, use purchase and browsing history to target better adds at unsuspecting customers.
  • The moral of the story here is don’t read IGN. I mean, y’all are already doing that, but shut up

Godot Reality (foxy)
https://godotengine.org/article/godot-3-vr-and-ar-support

  • Alpha 2 release is the ARVR Server architecture that makes VR and AR possible in Godot.
  • OpenVR is now supported in Godot through a GDNative module
  • It is unlikely for AR to be added to the official 3.0 release at this time.

Still Shocking Along
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598858095/system-shock/posts/2036871

  • So they produced that demo last year in unity and then ditched the work they did
  • Now they’re working on a “Vertical slice” in UE4
  • Q: When is the release date?
    • Over under of 5 years?
  • At least they are (for now) keeping Linux support.
  • In theory, the idea of a modern System Shock sounds appealing to me.
  • Then I take a step back and look at all the modern re-releases of games that have come out and I’m not too thrilled anymore.
  • “Remember that Demo we used to sell you this pitch? Yeah, fuck that thing!”

Open76
https://github.com/r1sc/Open76

  • Apparently the original game used the mechwarrior 2 engine. I’d like to see this turn into a proper engine port o’ that!
    • Probably unlikely as there’s a significant delta between the original engine and the one used in this game. But a girl can dream
  • I’m one of those people who much prefered ‘82.

PiSwitch (steveO)
https://hackaday.com/2017/10/20/diy-nintendo-switch-may-be-better-than-real-thing/

  • Lets’ be fair here, this is more of a wii-u than a switch. YOu can’t separate the controller sides from the unit
  • The switch also has some beefier hardware
  • That said, this is a really cool DIY project. I like the goal of adding all sorts of crazy button chord combinations to do stuff
  • Still a better love story than the Schmuck-Zero
  • Bonus soda: it’ll play more games than the Switch does, right now.
  • It just needs some shoddy, ant sized bluetooth controllers and done!

V-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Yeah, the choppa models look fine but that’s about it.
  • The terrain is bog standard.
  • There is an attempt at having a fitting background track but it gets old with a quickness.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Thupathupathupathupa
  • Mute the sounds and put on either “you spin me right round” or hatredcopter. Cuz you’re gonna get bored of the guitar noodleing fast
  • Visually this game is pretty meh
  • Da choppas definitely look like their historical counterparts, but you’re not doing anything fantastic in the looks department

P-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Even at the highest settings, the pop in is very much still there
  • The soldier animations when you land to drop some off or pick some up, look so bad!
  • The sounds are rather meh, too.
  • It works, but aesthetically speaking it’s nothing to write home about.

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Using (or attempting to) the Areola conrolla is a fkn nightmare.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Do not play this witha controller. No sir. You’ll have a good time
  • Gotta manage tilt, pitch and yaw like a regular ass helicopter
  • Game doesn’t care where your rotors are.

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • In simple control mode, the mouse and keyboard do actually let you control the game reasonably well.
  • It takes a little getting used to but it is just a little.
  • After a few minutes you’re already feeling like you’re actually in control, even you still end up crashing to the side of a mountain on occasion.

TotalCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN

V-CHAIR

  • The friggin UX lost this game a full Chair.
  • Online multiplayer it wicked-dead.
  • Single player exists but contains absolutely no joy.

J-CHAIR

  • I would chock this game in the simulator category
  • I’m sure amateur drone pilots and people into RC helicopters would absolutely get a kick out of this game
  • It does nothing for me though
  • The gameplay boils down to the capture and hold mode of windward, with more awkward controls and Russians
  • I’m sure all the various sorts of helicopters are cool for the enthusiasts, but again, does nothing for me

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • I didn’t hate it!
  • On Thursday, Jordan mentioned the similarity with Windward in the sense you’re going from one spot to the other doing some less than exciting stuff, while at the same time having to do some combat.
  • I’d say Heliborne is the opposite of Windward in this sense, because in Windward both combat and transportation bits were equally important.
  • Here, combat is where the focus is and, in our case, just being able to maneuver the helicopter.
  • The dropping offs and picking ups are mostly secondary unless a mission specifically requires it.
  • Windward is also more open worldy, while here it’s purely mission/scenario based.
  • But I did enjoy Heliborne in the same way I enjoyed Windward or American/Euro Truck Simulator for that matter.
  • It’s about the sailing, driving or flying for me.
  • I really enjoyed just starting heliborne in one of the longer missions and just flying around
  • In that respect, Windward still wins because it doesn’t cost $20.

  • Dedicated server support for modded mode is nice
  • They also redid their rendering engine, so custom maps will need to be rerendered and uploaded
  • No Vulkan or Linux specific fixes
  • You can reload and switch weapons while sprinting now. Useful for when you’re in the fuckbox and out of ammo on your primary weapon
  • They now allow you to toggle dynamic flow control which, in theory, is supposed to help multiplayer run smoother.

  • I can finally play the game on turbo graphics and hold over 60 for the most part.

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Worked fine OOTB with the Steam controlla.
  • I, guess it controls like a F1 car driven with a joystick?

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Right trigger accelerate, left trigger reverse. Pretty much all you need

FUN

V-CHAIR

  • Before you spool up your ReEEEEeeEEeE drives hear me out.
  • I’m not a fan of simulation games plain and simple.
  • City building, driving, dictating, you name it.
  • Why? It feels like I’m doing work and if I’m working I want to accomplish something.
  • Also, I don’t have a racing setup and a good one would cost as much as the new studio.
  • That said.
  • I SUCK at this game.
  • Seriously, 2+ hours doing laps in space-australia and the game is still telling me to get good.
  • I tried a few one off races with predictable results.
  • Even in the most extreme training wheels mode F1 2017 will skull FK you for blinking at the wrong time.
  • Some people get a raging clue when presented with this level of realism, me? Not so much.
  • I don’t follow F1 (I get it, just don’t follow it) so the career mode didn’t really add anything. BTW this season is almost over.
  • With driving games (Distance, Mad Max, Rocket Cars) I require the ability to dick around because I find that fun.
  • So if you are into the F1 you have already left a comment stating how WRONG I am but for the rest of you, hear this.
  • If you are looking for a “”sim”” to dip your toe-organ in pick up Dirt Rally.

J-CHAIR

  • Predictable, amirite?
  • The fact remains, that I’ve never really seen the appealof f1 aside from as an excuse to get trashed with your friends
  • I have no friends, and getting trashed makes me play even worse at this game, so you just lost two points there brad
  • Once again, this seems to be a game purely targeted at f1 enthusiasts and people with driving wheels into simulations
  • It’s like trying to peddle McNuggets to an anorexia meet. You’re marketing at the wrong people

P-CHAIRCHAIR

  • F1 2017 is better than F1 2015 but it still isn’t the F1 game that changed my mind about racing sims
  • Much like Venn, I suck all manner of dangly bits at this game, which isn’t really something that affects my enjoyment of a game.
  • It’s just that I can’t seem to enjoy F1 games at all.
  • That said, I don’t think this is a bad game at all.
  • The fact it uses Vulkan all the time and it shows by how smooth everything is, helps me recognize how good it is on a technical level.
  • I just don’t find it fun.

SALE!
http://store.steampowered.com/sale/halloween/

  • Meh?
  • Dying Light is $20 so that’s worth picking up if you have a beefy system.
  • Just yoinked Black Mesa for $7.99.
  • There have been a few games stuck in limbo on my Wishlist for awhile.
  • Quite a few dropped below £5 so I may be picking a few of them up.
  • Gave myself a limit of £20 and bought 6 games:
    • In Exilium, Magicka 2, Guns of Icarus: Alliance, Valley, Finding Teddy, and Defender’s Quest.
  • If crack is your thing, Darkest Dungeon is 50 percent off
  • Still waiting to see if tyranny will dip below 50% off in winter sale

Digital Steam
http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1455086641079110715

  • Erm, the type of people who buy Steam gift cards are usually the same ones who don’t want to buy them online.
    • Old People
    • People without bank accounts.
  • Could this be used for laundering on steam? What would we call that? Pressing? Ironing?
  • Can’t use wallet money
  • Interesting
    • If this is VALVe’s way to “stop” the card bots from gifting each other money and continuing to fuel the blackmarket going on with Steam, they’ll soon find out it’s easy enough to code a 3 day delay into the bots whenever they get one of these “gift cards”.

Curator update
http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1455086714383179848

  • Developers get more insight into the curators they share game keys with.
  • Curators — or groups of curators — via select parameters, such as name, operating system, language or specific tags.
  • They’ll be able to see curators’ follower counts and linked social media accounts to help verify their identity.
  • Of course, we didn’t get picked for the beta curator thing.
  • I am curious to see if… say, we want 3 keys for a game if that option will be available for us.
    • Probably not. We’d all need them curator pages
  • I am tickled by the prospect of one day seeing the Chairquisition featured on steam though. That makes me laugh. Ha ha ha

VALVe dev on Linux
https://twitter.com/Plagman2/status/923304477049810944

  • People tend to have strong feelings about people saying dumb stuff on Twitter. Maybe you should run for president!”
    • …dude
  • Perhaps we should wait until the next steam survey results before we make any comments on VR adoption
  • That said, I do think the linux numbers are definitely skewed due to how Valve tracks what games are played on what system
  • That’s one way to say “We’ve stopped pretending to care about Linux because the per capita money we get from them is less than even VR.”
  • Well no shit, Sherlock! If you market something to the people willing to spend a shitton of money on a fucking gimmick, then those people are far more likely to spend more money on their niche.
  • You want Linux gamers to pay more? Do something about it and actually promote/help Linux development.
  • So far, all we’ve seen are half-assed attempts. Remember the Steam machines?
  • Could have been great!
  • But let’s stop focusing on the past, instead let’s focus on the past…

Steambox Take two|
http://wccftech.com/ataribox-creator-explains-console-succed/

  • So the main difference here, as Atari puts it, is that they are willing to actually advertise the damn thing and leverage their name recognition
  • Integrating features the established consoles have, while providing old games built into a retro console type deal is what a lot of people seem to want.
  • The rampant demand for the NES Mini and SNES Mini are proof of that.
  • If VALVe had gone with say Alienware and said: “This is our console.”
  • They would have been far more successful than the shit show of nothingness we ended up with.
  • That said, I don’t the Atari box is going to do much better.
  • Not when the creator seems to be basing his expectations on feelings and anecdotal analogies of people wearing $10 Ramones t-shirts, equating to multiple hundreds of dollars in console sales because of “Brand Recognition”.
  • Which, if you’ll recall, the Atari that exists today is in itself a rebrand of Infogrames after they bought the Hasbro videogames division in 2001.
  • The original Atari died along with the videogame market back in 1984.

Creating Decent
http://steamcommunity.com/games/360950/announcements/detail/1492238800024274472

  • Yall motherfu*kers barely made updates to the Early Access build in the first place.
  • So, yeah, don’t tell me supporting it was becoming a “distraction”
  • Now they are wanting to direct all communication to brightlocker, a place where you can continue donating money to fund the development.
  • Don’t try to drive people onto some a new feedback platform (created by your friends) to solicit more $$$.
  • It’s a hard sell for a game that supposed to be delivered in March… of last year.
  • Expect a buggy ass campaign, then. Gotcha!
  • Single sales don’t seem to be keeping them afloat anymore
  • Especially because a lot of interested parties yoinked this game for a buck a few years back
  • Moving to brightlocker means that they’ve hit peak exposure on steam and are going to “need more money to finish the game”
    • Project management isn’t for punk ass bitches

Oh, tanks
http://steamcommunity.com/games/TankForce/announcements/detail/2971673269664095858

Tiny B Now on Linux
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253350/Tiny_Barbarian_DX/

  • Dat price.
  • After some looking about seems the devel raised the price to be inline with Nintendo store.
  • Another retro style hipster pixel platformer to throw on the pile.
  • Hey, it does have network multiplayer though. So that’s a plus
  • It doesn’t look Owlboy good to justify this price-tag, though!

AER
http://store.steampowered.com/app/331870/AER_Memories_of_Old/

  • This looks like some straight-up artsy shite.
  • That said, sometimes artsy shite can be fun.
  • It looks like something similar to that PS3 game Journey.
  • Which was actually pretty fun.
  • This was probably the highlight of the week in games that don’t like complete ASS on Steam, for me.

News:

Now how much would you pay
https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-6775-KR

  • That’s only around $60 less than the 1080.
  • Shipping on November 2nd
  • Limiting it to two per household isn’t going to stop miners from yoinking them all
    • I still think everyone made a BFYTW amount of these.
  • Barring that I don’t know why this card exists.
  • It pisses of anyone who picked up a 1070 in the last 6 months and anyone in the market is going to go for the 1080.
  • Yeah, the price difference between this and the 1080 make it hard to justify.
  • Especially after the miners scoop them all up and the price inevitably rises.

Unreal
https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/unreal-engine-4-18-released

  • Ctrl-f linux returns a new version of CLang, the new unreal audio sauce by default and support for visual studio code.
  • You need mono-complete to get the debug functionality on visual studio code for Linux.

MSdot
https://godotengine.org/article/introducing-csharp-godot

  • It seems like a harmless “buy some goodwill” donation, seems.
  • Also possibly a move to try and snag some unity developers who’d rather not switch to C++.
    • Like a bunch of babies.
  • C# is wicked-easy to learn, poorly.
  • Is this why they don’t want to support Vulkan?
    • No
  • Would it piss off their MS benefactors and any possible future donations?
  • Is this Godot’s way of saying we can expect Dx12 to happen?

New connected games on GOG
https://www.gog.com/connect?pp=df977a48f2a8bd3b1f399855135dc28faaaf09be

  • Got me 7 games.
  • Got 6, including one windows game I bought years ago. $123 bucks
  • All Spoopy ones too!
    • I wouldn’t say Postal and Hand of Fate qualify as spoopy.
      • Spoopy pissing. And Gambling addictions are both terrifying and profitable for some
  • That’s another $215.27 worth of 11 games to the GOG list.

V1
https://twitter.com/feralgames/status/923977346561998848

  • This is worth a mention since it’s the first title from Feral to officially support the Vulkan.
  • It will be nice to have another Vulkan benchmark.

OpenSky
https://forum.openmw.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4232

  • It’s quite wishful thinking that they’ll get a full rewrite of the bethesda engine that supports the fallouts, skyrims and the like
    • Lovely pipe dream though
      • If any other team had said that I would have agreed with you.
  • Welp, you lot just got yourselves a dedicated QA team.
  • Man, native Fallout 3/New Vegas and Skyrim on Linux would make me very happy!
  • Especially since Bethesda’s not involved.

JRPG from a rose

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It does an amazeballs job of simulating a failing video card.
  • That, however, is part of the game.
  • Take your drugs or things get blurry.
  • The building is incredibly detailed, even the parts you might look over.
  • The environments during the brain-humping segments are all over the place.
  • I might even say they are trying a little too hard to be “trippy” or “booga booga”
  • Good job on the audio, were talking Frictional level.
  • Voice acting is good for an indie game, take that how you will.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It’s UE4, so it gets all the nice texturing and graphical effects that come with it
  • That said, when you start jonesing for your medications, the effect gets more than a little annoying.
    • Venn’s not kidding when he mentions failing video card
  • Rutger Hauer doesn’t seem very into it. I keep expecting him to get fed up and pick up a shotgun.
  • The rest of the voice acting is relatively well done
  • They also have a good sense of ambiance. It gets spoopy quickly

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Disregarding the facts like Rutger Hauer has one tone throughout the whole thing, he clearly phoned his lines in and that this makes dialog sound even more disjointed than I guess they intended it to, this is a very good sounding game.
  • Assaultingly so, at some points.
  • The human characters all look like they were slapped so hard down the realism slope they landed face first in the Uncanny Valley, but with the whole undertone of cybernetic implants and body modifications, I will excuse it.
  • In fact, this game put me in the mood to excuse a great deal many things!

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • No issues with the XClone
  • Same with Areola Controlla

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • This game tries to do the frictional grab and stick, but it’s not quite as smooth as the game it takes inspiration from

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • The framerate jumping around like crazy and, every now and again, the cursor slipping from the confines of the window make it so I can’t give it 4 chairs.
  • But it would have to be really bad for this game to fuck up controls when I can play it with just the cursor keys, ctrl, shift and my 10 button mouse.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Doors, doors everywhere #calledit
  • Really, it’s alright.
  • Don’t really have any of the immersion since I’m playing in a little 1080p window.
  • Bit on the slow side.
  • Think visual novel with some interactive bits.
  • Puzzles are fairly easy to sort.
  • Lots of unintentional puzzles due to not being able to figure out what exactly you’re supposed to interact with.
  • For the most part does not rely on jump-scares.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • It’s another one of those walking simulators with a few “puzzles” strewn about
  • Most of the investigation you do is simply a scavenger hunt in one of 3 different modes.
  • Then you get to dive into people’s brains, at which point it just turns into layers of fear
  • While it’s a well done example of this sort of game, I’m not that into it
  • It’s just random spoopy shit shit thrown at you
  • As has been mentioned though, the “horror” here comes from a bunch of unnerving sounds and visuals, with not too many jump scares. That in itself deserves some recognition. To many games conflate startling with scary

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Even the few jump scares that it does have feel organic.
  • It’s like they were thought out to feel as natural as possible.
  • It’s like someone actually listened to criticism of Layers of Fear rather than throwing a hissy fit and standing their ground.
  • Observer is the symmetrical opposite to Frictional’s SOMA.
  • While SOMA took elements from Amnesia and Penumbra and wasn’t as good a game because of it, Observer took elements from Layers of Fear and brought them to the sci-fi thriller genre with great success!
  • I love to see developers actually take the criticism of their past mistakes and improving on them.
  • You’d expect this to be the common, sensible thing to do.
  • But we’ve seen the opposite happen so many times, it’s refreshing to actually see good decisions and improvements for once.

Steam News:

Sale
https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam-sale-dates-2017

  • Once upon a time I got excited for the steam sales.
  • Now thanks to humble and the limited selection of good stuff on linux, there isn’t much to be excited for anymore. Especially now that it’s once a month for the holiday season
    • That said, I might yoink tyranny if it gets super cheap. Or Pyre
  • At least once every other Sale there will be something wicked-cheap that I would normally never buy.
  • More often than not I end up using it as an excuse to buy people games on their wishlist #LGCcares.

TF 2.5
http://store.steampowered.com/news/33661/

  • Oh, they are adjusting game mechanics.
    • I for one look forward to the fanboy screeching about “bad” or “pointless” changes
  • I look forward to the screeching.
  • Real TF2 players use the original Quake MOD, on dialup.
  • 6 new maps.

Serious VR
http://store.steampowered.com/app/552440/The_Talos_Principle_VR/

  • Talos didn’t really need a VR version, but the serious engine supports it so here you are
  • I’m interested to see how teleporting around makes the timing based puzzles easier or harder
  • Supposedly this will work with your Radeon card. How well is TBD.
    • The AMD using Linux VR market is probably smaller than my dick, so we may never find out
  • I like to think there is that one guy inside Croteam (like @ ID back in the day) that is hell-bent on Linuxing all the things.
    • Or, like we’ve been screaming for years, if you do the work once on the engine, ya don’t really have to redo it
    • Straight from the leprechaun’s beard
  • At least someone still cares about Linux when it comes to VR.

DN4E released
http://store.steampowered.com/app/25000/Overgrowth/

  • They were not kidding about a short beta period.
  • They started Humble Bundle two years after Overgrowth was announced.
  • Seriously, this game was announced when George Bush was president.
  • The reviews seem on par with what I expected.
  • A glorified sandbox with a slapdash story mode that seems rushed out the door.
  • Now, let’s see what score IGN gives it *grabs all the popcorn*

Dying content
http://store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/steam_community_announcements/2139632606731468392

  • Three new weapons.
  • Because in 2017 it’s a legit event to include free content.
  • Also, don’t show me that damn video everytime I launch the game.
  • The new weapons would be nice if they didn’t break after 5 swings.
  • I’m just glad to see they’re still actively maintaining Dying Light.

Yarrr
http://store.steampowered.com/app/723790/The_Pirate_Plague_of_the_Dead/

  • I’m not that big into sailing simulators, open world or no
  • That said, you can release the kraken in this, so my interest is piqued
    • That may or may not be a euphemism
  • It’s free, so it has that going for it.

Dungeons 3
http://store.steampowered.com/app/493900/Dungeons_3/

  • Man, I love when games provide actual Linux requirements. I feel spoiled Dungeons 3
  • This is a dungeon keeper style game where you design death traps for heroes and populate them with monsters to pick off the stragglers. Warms my sadistic heart
  • There is an overworld mode which is more like an RTS. I’m not sure how I feel about that part.

GokenUP
http://store.steampowered.com/news/?appids=671260

  • They’re fixing the performance!
  • They did something, the frame time jank is much less pronounced now.
  • But it’s still there!
    • How. though?
  • Yeah, just tried it and the jank is most assuredly still there and wicked-noticeable.

Green Acers
http://steamcommunity.com/games/255710/announcements/detail/3011079766659897063

  • Lots of bug fixes.
  • No Hulk 🙁 !

News:

1070
https://www.pcper.com/news/General-Tech/unofficial-launch-GTX-1070-Ti

  • *holds his breath until the 1380/3080/whatever comes out*
  • It’s basically a 1080 that miners won’t be all that interested in because memory.
  • I could never justify a 1080 (even for benching) but FSM damn this woke other Venn from his slumber he wants it
  • It’s a slightly cheaper 1080 until the miners buy them all up.
  • AMD put out Vega and NVidia releases a Ti that’s aiming at the exact same performance/price range as the Vega 56 was supposed to.
  • Supposed to being the operative words there, since they’re stupidly expensive because of the miners.

I come from a
https://www.humblebundle.com/down-under-bundle

  • Holy shit! An actual worthwhile bundle! All but Hurtworld are on linux
    • Suck it IGN!
  • Man, if Crawl had some network multiplayer, it would be hella after show bait
  • I really don’t want to pay $12 for Armello.
  • It’s the only Linux game there I don’t have and would like to.

Observe, citizen
https://www.aspyr.com/games/observer

  • The game that was on Linux (then no so much) is now back.
  • It’s not entirely back, yet!
  • They say it’s coming soon but it’s not available yet.
    • 10/24 if you read the email.

Scanning
https://github.com/scanmem/scanmem/releases/tag/v0.17

  • I had to go back and check, but we didn’t talk specifically about this one back in ep 162, but a related project that uses this
  • It’s a handy dandy utility that lets you see what your application is doing in memory. Handy for writing hacks or fuzzing
  • They have a number of optimizations that add anywhere from 10-40% performance boost in certain operations
  • They’ve also split the code into the UI (Text or GUI) and library

Needs more metal speedo
http://www.openra.net/news/release-20171014/

  • They’ve ditched the mod selector in favour of having dedicated shortcuts/apps for every mod. Useful if you’re only playing Dune 2000
  • There’s also a command bar
  • Autodiscovery of lan games is a nice touch
  • Community-driven balance improvements to Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn.
    • Always iffy. Communities usually have a skewed vision of “balance”

Wowza
https://github.com/wowserhq/wowser

  • Actiblizzion Cease and Desist inbound in 3…2…1…
    • Followed by account bans of anyone who uses this
  • It’s a neat project though. Trying to get a functional WoW client done in the browser using WebGL
  • So far they’re only supporting up to the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion.

  • It looks alright but yeah, has that blender feel.
  • Not much to look at since your sandbox is roughly half the size of Peter Dinklage.
  • This game is supposed to be about the music?
  • Oh FK right off.
  • This is sampling and sequencing, nothing more.
  • You are basically generating background tracks for the game Distance.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

FUN

V-CHAIR

  • 51 minutes in and no (as in ZERO) idea what’s going on or what the hell i’m supposed to be doing.
  • What the actual hell, that’s it?
  • That was a tutorial level if if i’m being generous.
  • It came across more like an wholey unpolished tech demo (the kind you take around to investors) if i’m being honest.
  • That, or it’s some hipster art project of bullsh*t.
  • This is the first time I would be 100% A O K with someone refunding a game after they finished it.
  • Quit trying to pawn off your unfinished art projects on Steam.

J-CHAIR

  • Yeah, what the fuck am I supposed to be doing? I’m collecting sounds and ground-lsd.
  • Dropping some phat beatzzzzz tho
  • After Pedro mentioned he fluked into beating Beat the game, I decided to take another crack at it
  • Okay, so the game itself is about an hour long
  • It starts off as this really vague and ill conceived scavenger hunt and ends with a pattern matching game for 3 year olds
  • Honestly, I think it’s pretty stupid
  • I get that they were trying to do something different, but the thing about experiments is that they sometimes fail. This is one of those times
  • Really not worth 10 bucks. Maybe 2 at most for the amount of actual gameplay you get
  • Also the sequel baiting was a bit of a fuck you

P-CHAIR

  • It was the To Be Continued screen of nope that had me going WHAT?!
  • The moment I started to get what the game wanted me to do and had any kind of gameplay mechanic that wasn’t just meandering about, hoping to trigger a cutscene, the game just ends.
  • They call themselves Worm Animation, was a game really the best medium for this “story”?
  • Heavy air quotes around the term story there because even in the 47 minutes it took me to Beat the Game (that’s not a clever name btw!) they introduced a ton of things and explained nothing!
  • I can hear some of you asking “Aren’t you the one who is okay with games not telling you what to do and just letting you figure it out?” – Yes, I am! I was starting to enjoy my figuring out of where to get sounds and interact with the world, but then the game ended.
  • And I still have no fucking clue what the hell anything is, in this world.
  • There’s a lot of environmental clues to a post-apocalyptic world, which is now inhabited by sonorous geometric shapes, odd looking creatures and a zombie named Bob.
  • I want to know what Bob’s motivations are!

Steam News:

What’s in
http://www.pcgamer.com/valve-reflects-on-the-orange-box-ten-years-later/

  • I bought it twice, once for the Xbox 360 and again for PC some years later when I finally had a decent computer again
  • I didn’t realize that while developing Portal and TF2 that they were almost a single team
  • Man, I remember when this business came out of nowhere and everyone lost their collective shite.
  • At no point did I think any of it would be available on Linux.
  • Oh, look! The beginning of the end for Valve as game developers.
  • Well, until that stupid card game comes out.
  • That’ll be the nail on that coffin.

Cheap steam
https://www.neowin.net/news/steam-games-will-become-much-cheaper-in-select-regions-soon

  • Wait, it’s not region locked?
  • Don’t see developers jumping on this on one.
  • Added fk mothering Israeli New Shekel (ILS).
  • Valve recommending developers to update their prices from time to time in order to achieve decent sales, in accordance with the respective country’s economy
    • Read lower your prices and maybe people might stop pirating your games.   And then we get a cut too
    • Not 100% sure that’s going to help though
  • TIL what the Khazakstani currency is

Free VR
https://partner.steamgames.com/vrlicensing

  • Valve isn’t going to be charging licensing fees for developing VR peripherals and other technology
  • You still gotta pay for the ASICS, Vives and computers beefy enough to test your shit.
  • In principle not a bad idea.   “Open”ing up technologies like this free developers to try and innovate.  Meaning is Valve is really hoping someone will come up with something super cool to justify selling peopleVR

BIG VR
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/10/valve-announces-the-first-big-steamvr-2-0-feature-waaay-more-space/?amp=1

  • So we’ve heard bits and pieces about the new base stations, but now we get the claim that they’ll allow for 10 times the square footage tracked
    • Meaning that you have ample room to crash into shit and break your house!
  • Just give us the damn holoshed already.   But, you know, without it malfunctioning and the holograms becoming real
  • I really think they should focus on the reverse.
  • Most people cannot dedicate an entire room to VR.
  • Hell, a lot cannot clear out the space needed to use the current setup.

Cars
https://www.rocketleague.com/news/rocket-league-patch-notes-v1-38/

  • Mac/Linux: Farmstead map visuals have been updated
    • And by that they mean, they fixed the texture fuck up which made the walls look black.
    • Can confirm.
  • Fixed several issues with in-game grass.

  • So this is a sort of PUBG/DOTA/Diablo hybrid?
  • Either way, it’s going free to play now.  Still gotta pay for extra character slots and cool skins
  • I tried this when it was still in beta/early access.
  • I’ve never liked PvP in MMOs and a PVP MMO isn’t really changing my mind.
  • Unity scream of nope!

    • Someone shoot me now! This is the point we’ve come to.
  • Graphics: Shader Model 3.0 Compatible GPU, 986 MB VRAM
    • Damn! I only have 985MB of VRAM!
  • This is basically world of tanks with da choppas.
  • I’m curious if these guys have decent joystick support, cuz that might be a wee fun

Steam got Sol…us
https://plus.google.com/+Solus-Project/posts/ZL8C2wBqbfg
https://github.com/solus-project/linux-steam-integration/releases/tag/v0.4

  • Basically, Solus (Ikey mostly) is trying to fix VALVe’s shit when it comes to library cock-ups affecting the base client functionality
  • There has already been the nasty side effect of some games not working as a result, but they’ve fixed all the reported issues in a matter of hours.
  • The worst offenders seem to be Feral ports which rely on a lot of shipped libraries on top of what the runtime already provides.
  • Or, or, get this.
  • You could use stock Ubuntu and things just work.
    • Unless you’re trying to use the mesa drivers.
    • Or watch a trailer in fullscreen on the store.
    • Or try to use Steam on Wayland with the NVidia drivers.

  • You thought Humble had already turned into yet another soulless storefront?
  • You haven’t seen anything yet, son.
  • The Humble blog dances around the fact that IGN straight-up OWNS all things Humble.
  • IGN is owned by j2global who also own
    • Ziff Davis
    • PC Mag
    • Askmen.com
    • Geek.com
    • Everyday Health
  • If you thought Linux support was getting a bit sketchy as time went by, it’s not even going to be a priority now.
  • I hope I’m wrong, but I haven’t seen much of anything Linux related in IGN outside of the Steam Machine bashing.
  • I’m just waiting for the humble doritos and mountain dew bundle.  Cuz I want some cheap soda
  • Short term this is really going to hurt Humble because the IGN hate train has already pulled out the station even before they’ve had a chance to do something massively stupid.

Border Bundle
https://www.humblebundle.com/endless-rpg-lands-bundle

  • 10 bucks for both borderlands ATM.
    • If you don’t have them it’s a good deal.
  • Guild of dungeoneering seems like a neat little dungeon keeper riff, but it’s not for linux.  Boo.

So, two more years?
http://blog.wolfire.com/2017/10/Overgrowth-Beta-6—The-Final-Beta

  • The DN4E of Linux games is finally getting released.
  • I could never bring myself to pay 29.95 for the privilege of testing it.
    • You and me both.  And I actually liked Lugaru
  • I want to know what lit the fire under their arse-organs.
  • Because they went from cocking about to GET IT SHIPPED!
  • I am curious to see what all these years of development did, but not £25 curious.
  • Also, if the Duke Nukem forever analogy holds it’s going to be pretty disappointing.
    • Or maybe I’m just fucking jaded.

RPCS3 gets high
https://rpcs3.net/blog/2017/10/08/introducing-high-resolution-rendering/

  • Now you can force the emulator to do the upscaling.
  • Incidentally, have any of you ever tried running PS1 games at higher resolutons?
    • My roommate and I were playing megaman legends at 1650×1080 and it looked pretty bad
    • You still need those HD textures in order for it to not look bad
  • I wonder what Persona 5 looks like at UHD *gets carted off by DMCA lawyers*
  • That comparison with Demon’s Souls going from 720p to 4k is not helping my wanting to play it so goddamn bad!

Spider game
https://etodd.itch.io/deceiver

  • Play as a Tachicoma while someone spews Ayn Rand at you
  • Listen, if I wanted to hear to a bunch of that crap, I’d go talk to the Atomic Ass
  • Closed alpha?
  • Also, i’m not downloading the itch app.

  • The UI is also all over the place because touchscreen.

FUN?

V-

  • I like throwing a mobile “port” in the mix every now and then.
  • Unfortunately Death Point comes from the type of developers who want to charge $13.99 for their $4.99 mobile game.
  • That by itself would not be a bad if they had gone back and properly adapted it for PC.
  • Hell, I would cut them some slack if an attempt was made, it wasn’t.
  • Far as the game, it’s generic top-down sneak around stealth simulator on a budget.
  • Nothing new, nothing original, and irritating to control.

J-

  • Stealth games are a little tricky to pull off.   It requires that you have the player wait around a bunch, so you have to design the game with a good deal of tension to make the wait seem worthwhile
  • This game just doesn’t do that.
  • Hitmango did this a lot better.  AND THAT SHIT WAS A MOBILE PORT TOO!
  • Checkpoints are just spawn points, meaning that if you want to walk away from the game, you gotta restart the entire level you’re on
  • And FSM help you if you die.  Get ready to listen to the same godawful dialogue over and over and over and over and over and over
  • The Fucky ass controls don’t help much either.   An hour of this crap was all I could tolerate

P-

  • I have a few genres I like.
  • I have others in which I find a game I like once in a blue moon.
  • Then there is the Stealth genre.
  • I absolutely loved the original Thief: The Dark Project and the sequel.
  • I don’t think any other stealth games have ever come close to those for me.

  • Lots of items for buffs but (and I like this) you can ignore them if you get good.
  • Boss battles are a wee on the repetitive side.
  • Speaking of I would like to see a bit more hit back because enemies don’t always blink red (guessing this is a bug) when booped.
  • Has issues, yes but at the end of the day it’s quite savable.

  • And this is where the second part of my spiel about aesthetics and mechanics from earlier comes.
  • While some of the visual elements are lacking and others can be outright deceitful, the mechanics themselves are solid and the Dark Souls lite style of combat is very satisfying as you level up.
  • Going back to earlier areas for the metroidvania style exploring bits you couldn’t before, reveals exactly how much stronger your character is becoming.
  • And that’s important in making that backtracking much less tedious.
  • The one thing I didn’t like is how, for all its freedom for the most part, there are certain points where the game very much leads you by the nose down a linear path and only unlocks the “open world” after you’ve hit specific set pieces.
  • It’s not as bad as Aragami, but I’d rather not feel like my agency is taken away from me for the sake of another in-engine cutscene.
