automake or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

so; I’ve been working on a secret project lately and decided I wanted to be l33t and use automake to ensure it’d compile right out of the box; but my brain is beginning to bleed. I was curious if anyone had any experience in making a configure.ac / Makefile.am or even knew a website / tutorial that’s been updated in the past 4 years that could help out.
