Hopefully this one is not gonna be another cheap wrapper.

Aspyr being into the linux porting game means very good things. They have an impressive list of games they’ve ported to the Mac: http://www.aspyr.com/games

I wish Bioshock Infinite would be next now.

Oh man I could finally play Bioshock infinite if they ported it. That would a nice day. These guys seem to do good ports so we can only hope :3 Maybe some borderlands 2 to top it off.

At the end of the day, it still 2K Games who gets to decide what gets ported, no matter how talented Aspyr are.

I wish more game companies would aspire to be more like Aspyr…

if only someone could gift me that (or loan me $13; have $4.19 in the bank)

Oh and Strider, this is a 2010 game. Those arguments you used to defend the Witcher 2 (2011) sound a little silly now, don’t they?

In all seriousness, respekt for these Aspyr Media guys!

When did I say that all old games had to ported using a wrapper? Aspyr chose to do it the right way, good for them, it will really pay off.

Good. No wrappers is the right way.

Let’s see, since you’re keen on generalization even though I did specifically mention The Witcher 2 (by name):
    “I really don’t mind the fact that’s it’s a wrapper, it’s an old game after all…” – Google+

“A game from 2011 is old, I understand they don’t want to invest lots of resources on old stuff…” – Also from Google+

    https://plus.google.com/113165865431448 … F4Vwi5nmju

    Also:

“I’d say 3 years qualifies as “old” but seeing how the Linux gaming community react to the wrapped version of The Witcher 2, we seem to have different standards on what old is.” –
    Wizardry 6 thread

    As I said, silly!

Quote me as much as you want, I still stand by what I said :p

The Witcher 2 is old, so is CivV. I have no problem with a wrapper being used, I have a problem with the said wrapper being shit (and / or the game not being in beta).

Aspyr did their port without using a wrapper (they could have if they had wanted to) and their port kicks ass. Does that mean that native ports are better than wrapped versions? Well, mostly yes. But let’s not forget that we had our share of shitty native ports as well

Granted, some native ports have been shit to the point of making the Witcher 2 look like it almost works. I won’t debate that. Hell, I’ll be first in line to present several Unity games as evidence.

But as for “Does that mean that native ports are better than wrapped versions? Well, mostly yes.”, I’ll take a dev that tried to port their game over to Linux and failed over some asshole who wraps his game and attempts to fly it under the radar. Honesty goes a long way in gathering good will from a community of jaded cynics such as Linux.

That and native ports, even with all the cock ups, have a much better track record performance/stability-wise than wrappers ever will.

It’s the linux community, nothing can fly under the radar ^^

There are not enough wrapped games to build metrics about their stability. Does Limbo even count? Their Wine bottle didn’t even work, I always ran the game under regular wine.
I haven’t tested System Shock 2 yet but that game is so ancient, I can’t imagine it being slow.

That said, I’ve played many games on Wine that were just as stable and fast as native games (RAGE, Dishonored). Had they put these game in a (proper) wine bottle, would I have been ok with it ? Yes, I probably would have. (Although, it would have been weird to see Dishonored, an UE3 game, not get a native port).

The important thing is that we never see wrapped versions of games *yet to be released*. I highly doubt this will ever happen but if it does, go on, go batshit crazy on them.

Speaking of DosBox and wine wrapper look like Night Dive Studios struck again and dumped all the old Tex Murphy on Steam.
