I am not going to make this a Direct3D vs OpenGL debate – there are enough of those. D3D has some advantages, especially if you only intend to target Windows/Xbox. OpenGL has plenty of issues which the likes of Carmack, Rich Geldriech and others have already spoken about.OpenGL is poor when it comes to multithreading. This would be an issue whether the port was native, or wrapped. Contexts cannot be used across threads, and it seems shared contexts hurt performance. Again we have been talking to NV and AMD and the advice seems to be “dont do it”.
Direct3D9 on the other hand, has specific provision for multithreaded usage, and it works well. This is what WINE works around with CSMT, and what we are trying to implement now. Even if we’d done a native port, we’d still have this problem.
The linux community seems to have this odd idea that “native porting” is a magic bullet that solves all problems. It is not.
Anyway, as this is going to be troll fodder, I won’t be responding to this forum again. People wishing to give useful technical feedback can do so at Github.”
Yeah Witcher 2 debate is still alive! and this as a bonus:

not many people on Linux_gaming seems to have a problem with wrappers… so yeah

KeymasterFrom the company that didn’t even KNOW about CSMT ladies and gentlemen.
Think Aspyr Media got the CIV V port because reason. The W2 “port” by Virtual Programming will go down in Linux gaming history ..in a bad way.

MemberI hope you’re right Venn, but then again “developers” (VP) in the same discussion stated that they can’t discuss Witcher 3 development, tried to say it means nothing, but it rubs me the wrong way.
but “devs” aside, thats a actual post from a user on reddit:[]idoithere -1 points 7 hours ago
I rather defend them. At the end of the day, I rather have developers be happy to help us then annoyed. If they are happy to help us, very cool benefits might emerge. Linux might be the first platform they use to develop their game, better chances of playing alpha or beta version of their gameYeah one down vote, but still, does people mistaken developers for their abusive dads? “gotta make daddy happy, so he won’t beat me with a dildo, and maybe even gonna buy me that chinese PS3 knock off for christmas…”

KeymasterIndeed. Ever since the linux_gaming > linuxgaming merge it’s been full-metal “how do I Linux game” the subreddit.
I.E. (some posts from today)
“Download Windows games on Linux via Steam?”
“Show off your Linux Steam library”
“Anyone having trouble with Mount and Blade: Warband?”
“SteamDB.info – link to list all of the sale games that run on linux”I fully expect the new community to support wrapped “ports”. For them Linux is a tinker toy, not their primary OS.
Yes, I sound entitled.

ParticipantThe developers want my money (and get it) — then complain when I’m pissed about a substandard product.
Wait, who’s acting all entitled here?

KeymasterThis guy, this guy nailed it.
June 30, 2014 at 7:53 pm #71260__eMpTy__
ParticipantThe Wine wrapper CAN work, if done properly, and shit native ports can happen too. None of that changes the fact that Witcher 2 for Linux is busted.
OpenGL is different and hard, boo-hoo. It’s excuses, after the fact, after the money has changed hands, that rub me the wrong way.
Still, I’m impressed VPLTD bro had the balls to descend into the shatrealm. Oh, wait, he didn’t…

MemberYeah, but whats really funny is that “devs” actually trying to make it a OGL vs DX debate. Because guess what? It is distracting people from the real issue at hand here: THE GAME IS FUCKING BROKEN!. Im not talking about a wrapper here (tho it is source of the problems), it could be a full native release designed on linux for linux, If the “devs” had fuck all idea what they where doing and coded it never even thinking about learning about how to code on linux/ for OpenGL it’s not gonna fucking work. And then they releasing it, just like that as a working title. And they blaming OpenGl/Linux for that… YEAH NEWS FLASH!! OPERATING SYSTEMS ARE DIFFERENT!
TL;DR? What __eMpTy__ said

KeymasterPersonally, I’m in favor of not ever mentioning the Witcher 2 and its “Linux” version.
VP and eON can die in the fires of oblivion.

KeymasterI’m FK all horrified he is under NDA for W3 o_0
Lapinopl is spot on.
If, IF their ZOMG9000 tech worked ..no issue. What we’re pissed about is the “port” being turbo-balls shite.
CD Projekt RED made what can only be described as a horrid misapplication of judgement.

http://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/co … a_wrapper/What is it with devs acting like whinny little bitch lately? Maybe they are just accustomed to feeding shit to Windows users who don’t know any better. Can’t take the heat GTFO of the Linux kitchen.
