MemberThis link is a forum thread it is long and explains what has happened. Right now AAO 2 is not playable without an Auth system. The community is at a dead stand still and may never recover.

MemberIt appears in the Anti-Cheat scheme of things (trying to catch the hackers) they had an admin who did something that wasn’t on par. So the comunity is in uproar and the Admins are trying to defend themselves. I sent Spanky (one of the Admins) a pm and told him pull the plug on the forums till you have control. It was getting ugly. So basically the admin put a backdoor in the Assist program to catch hackers. He went to far and then at about 3am he pulled the entire server offline that did the authentication and anti cheat. So basically right now it is

I did post in the forums that I would pursue the source code, the whole entire reason it went this route it PB/EvenBalance no longer supports this version. Now the Source Code should be PD due to the US taxpayers paid for this project. The Devs at AAO say they can’t due to Epic. In follow up on that Epic once enterin the agreement made this null and void due to once abandoned it becomes PD due to it being a Gov project. Also there is thought of using the open source version of the unreal engine for the game which would mean re-coding the game. The aao25.com site is offline as of 30 minutes ago.

The latest version of assist include a new anti-cheat feature that allowed us to search peoples computers for cheats or hacks, We have now come to realise that this was unwise and could compromise players security or privacy so the system has been shut down to prevent any further risk to players. there was no trojan it was all done within the assist client.
No body’s computer is at risk and no body’s personal information has been compromised. The 2.5Assist project has now been shutdown and will not return.

MemberNo guys There was no backdoor that was the rumour. read above posts it explains it. They got into a grey area and basically hit the wall with no solution so they quit. So I am pursuing the source code for the game. Anyone got a direct line to Epic? I am pursuing the AAO forums for the direct line to the AAO side. Had to sign up at Epic just to get access to leave a message. I might call tomorrow.

KeymasterF-man, from what I read it looks like they were scanning drive content without permission. IMHO that does not fall into a “grey” area. Your results may differ.
P.S.
Thanks for pointing this out. Will be on this weeks show.September 10, 2013 at 7:43 pm #69530Freejack_

A couple of the other Devs expounded on it and they said it was a grey area but I was thinking it fell in the same category as PB/EvenBalance for TOS.
