That buggy video got me thinking how cool it would be if we had a twisted metal like game on Linux. I figured I might try programming a game inpired by TM. What do you guys think, would you play a game like that?

I personally, would just add it to Helena, add it as a deathmatch option. So it wouldn't be TM exactly, it'd be more a battle royal with crazy jumping tanks instead of cars.

I like the cut of your jib, guy. Just include online multi-player support.

Of course. Yea that was my bad, this would be multiplayer, I wouldn't be programming AI.

Sounds like a proper idea. Linux could really use a online racong game. I had hopes for http://maniadrive.raydium.org/but that project died some time ago.

and for everything else, there's the Quake engine ;)

Hmm, have a go at http://www.q3rally.com/

Pulled the SVN a few months back and after 30min or (the devel LIKES TO NAME THINGS IN UPPER CASE) so managed to get it into a semi-playable state.

    Might be worth a fork

I tried my hands at game engines once. I tried to make Helena using the Torque engine, and made some zombie vs. humans game with it. My thoughts are that if you're going for really original gameplay, it's just too hard to tear an engine that far down and get it to do what you want it to. I know it works great for some people, it just doesn't work well with my style :/

Thanks for the tip though. To be fair, there are also cross-platform network libraries out there made for games. Part of it was also just a personal challenge to myself to see what if I could do network programming.

Oh man, that super tux kart racer looks pretty good. Has deathmatch levels just like Mario Kart. Now if they just make it multiaplyer, oh baby.

Well, I think I'm gonna have to call the deathmatch idea. I would really like to see it made, but I'm not sure if the game is popular enough to warrant that much more effort.

And about the online racing game Venn, you know it's just like the Joker says: “If you're good at something, never do it for free” :)
