ParticipantChromium instead of Chrome ? Seriously ? When using Chromium I still activate Sync so it’s still the same regarding privacy. If you want to be in control of your data, use Firefox. the ony difference between Chrome and Chromium is that Chromium doesn’t ship with some pattented shit which make it a PITA and does not provide more privacy at all.
Don’t know anything about sailfish. Is it usable ? Does it give you control over the hardware ?
If I was really paranoid (meaning I didn’t want my data to go to ANYONE, not just Google because I would have watched a bullshit Microsoft FUD ad) then I’d be using Replicant http://replicant.us/ My phone would be shit, but at least my data would be safe.( I don’t care enough, so I’m sticking with Cyanogenmod)Youtube -> Megacops. Doesn’t exists yet apart from a very early prototype. Anyone with some balls and basic Django knowledge should help me code it. Or use Mediagoblin as Freejack said.
GMail -> https://www.mailpile.is/ + self hostsed postfix / imap server + a domain name for the MX record.
Drive -> http://sparkleshare.org/ it uses git, you host the data, it’s good.
Gmaps -> http://www.openstreetmap.org/ I fucking hate the OSM interface compared to GMaps but it’s the only open alternative (and the data is pretty fucking good, it’s just the UI that’s utter shit)

ParticipantOh and you and I forgot one of the most important:
Skype / Hangouts -> http://tox.im/ Still have to try it out, but it looks promising.

ParticipantOf course, you need to host all that shit somewhere.
I wouldn’t trust anything hosted in the USA, even in your own house, unless you encrypt everything.
Plus dedicated servers are expensive as fuck in the USA, I believe those who sell those must be crack addicts or something similar.Regarding data privacy, I wouldn’t trust UK, France, Australia, probably Germany and any state with nullshit anti-privacy laws. I still host my stuff in France, I don’t trust it, but I don’t care enough to do otherwise.
I believe Iceland and Sweden are pretty cool regarding data privacy. The best solution would be to find a server hosting company with decent prices, VPN over there and install every service on this server.

ParticipantAnd what will happen when Google buys Valve?

ParticipantI only posted this to just start a discussion, I was not making any recommendations, all the services that Google offers do make life easier but they are expendable and I can live without everything needing to synchronize via Google “seamlessly”. I say there’s not reason an open architecture/standards cannot be developed that offers such a framework for interoperability of internet services but Strider makes a good point, even if we drop Google because they are using our metadata to commercialise us, privacy will still be an issue while governments and agencies can access our metadata to politicise and monitor us, their citizens.
