KeymasterAfter much demand, I’m now running Xubuntu 13.10 on my old Desktop PC. Apparently, the Douche Train was afraid I’d curse #!.
This thread is here to shed some truth on the Torrent of 10/10’s that the Linux media has showered the latest iteration of XFCE Ubuntu.
First off, the Live session crashed 5 different times on me. I downloaded the iso 3 times in total and even ran an md5 check just to be sure.
Tried 3 different USB flash drives, none of which had ever had any problems and the sunovabitch still came down faster that Paris Hilton in a Monaco Hotel.
Finally managed to install it, only to have it boot to a Black Screen of Death. Edited the Linux line in the Grub entry and removed the $vt_handoff flag. Lo and behold, it boots.
Installed updates, so far so- Oh what now… 5 different error boxes showed up.
My WiFi dongle wouldn’t work, ndiswrapper is b0rked and Realtek have 0 interest in updating the RTL8192CU driver to work with kernels above 3.9.
Took me damn close to 4 hours to get it even remotely close to workable.
Fuck you people! If I didn’t like you so much, I’d be hunting you all down.

MemberLOL, you know it might have been better to get Kubuntu and then load xfce and dump KDE. or leave KDE and use the KDE stuff in Xfce4. Just a thought. Been there done that, got the T-shirt and sure as hell didn’t enjoy myself. Just to let you know I am converting my KDE over to Xfce4 thanks to Venn.

ParticipantI never buy flavoured milk for the same reason, always get plain and then add your favourite flavour to taste! (I am being very symbolic, milk=Linux, flavour=UI, its called poetic license, OK!)

KeymasterThe WiFi dongle is 5 months old.
Everything else is from 05/06. There’s absolutely no excuse for the amount of shit I had to go through.

Memberit’s 13.10…… you did a fresh install, if you upgraded it carried a few things. 13.04 would have been the better choice them do a system upgrade.
