MemberIf you would like to play DooM 2 online with OpenGL and modern multiplayer options, check this out. This and Odamex are the two best DooM ports with Linux clients
It’s in Arch AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zandronum/
Ubuntu PPA and tar.bz2 http://zandronum.com/download
Some RPM http://pkgs.org/download/zandronumLook for Sore-Loser

MemberI’m down. I have gotten the occasional Doom2 Deathmatch/Duel itch since back in the Dwango/BBS days.

MemberI’d like to add a semi-interesting tidbit since it is mentioned here. I am one of the Odamex developers… have been for years. I also ported the Zandronum launcher (Doomseeker) to Mac (which is why my nick appears in the “about” box.) Obviously I’m a little biased in saying that I prefer Odamex but, unlike Zandronum, it has always been open-source, GPL licensed, and runs on just about anything that SDL does (Linux x86, x86-64, ppc, arm, etc.) I even ported it the original Xbox. The majority of the time I develop on Odamex using Linux. Anwyay, I’m glad to see that it came up here.

MemberHyper_Eye I’m glad to see you here as well. I actually prefer Odamex, the ONLY problem that I have with it is the community, which there is virtually none. I’ve sat on servers waiting for people to join, only to sit alone. I THINK the problem is, Skulltag/Zandronum has all the additional content (game modes, weapons, etc.) that attract the “new school” players. I am as biased as you, I feel that Odamex’s speed, movement and focus on the traditional DooM2 elements is superior. Playing Odamex FEELS like the old doom2.exe. I honestly think that Odamex is superior to ZDaemon even, and if the ZD community all took the time to try Odamex they would feel that way as well. I still love the deathmatch/duel gameplay of DooM2 after all these years, and as a Linux only gamer, I have to go where the community is… so I hit the Zandronum servers.

MemberFreejack_ wrote:I love the Doom series games………now to find the disks for the Iwads.Odamex supports the free iwad Freedoom. It will even take the place of doom.wad or doom2.wad when connecting to servers as long as the level being played on that server is part of a pwad.

Still we have our ups and downs when it comes to average player count. Building a community is difficult and it is certainly the biggest thing we struggle with.

KeymasterI don’t mind building from source but what is the easiest to setup multiplayer?

MemberShould be in with the game client .deb in your case. What you need is a package called “doomseeker” like Hyper_Eye mentioned. After you install it and point the config to where Zandronum is, It will act as a server and launch you into the chosen server. My bad, I forgot to mention it in the post.
http://doomseeker.drdteam.org/download.php# (Source and Ubuntu)
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?O=0&K=doomseeker (for all my ARCH homies)
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/ … 4.rpm.html (SUSE, best I could do fer ya Fedora guys)
And last but not least…
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.0/ … oomseeker/ (for Slackware… cuz it’s cool still)

MemberDoomseeker also functions as an alternative launcher for Odamex. So if you have both clients installed you can use Doomseeker to see both types of servers at once and join either fairly seamlessly. Doomseeker is a Qt-based launcher. The official Odamex launcher is WxWidgets based (which uses gtk+ on Linux.)

MemberGood point Hyper_Eye, in fact zandronum and odamex are the only two clients in my doomseeker.
