Steam News:

SteamOS update
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1471966894886933187/

  • The flatpak is now all official and stuff.
  • Updated Linux kernel to 4.11.12
  • mesa 17.1.2
  • A few distros are now actively introducing flatpak support by default.
  • And I’m guessing with SteamOS, you know the one you need to be compatible with if your distro hopes to play any games, with that one supporting flatpaks you’d do well to support them too.

Group updates
http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1446071197008661976

  • Oh, now you’re introducing a request to join queue?
  • Basic functionality and you introduce it now?
  • You realize that speaks more about your past shortcomings rather than your willingness to improve, right VALVe?
  • Also, this is probably the least needed update on the community front.
  • It was perfectly serviceable even if it was missing functionality you’d expect to be there from the get go.
  • The Curator system is still horrible, it’s still stupidly limited and it serves no practical purpose. In most game’s pages, the logos of the curators you follow and their curation message show up so far down that most people don’t see them.
  • Steam will never become a social network because it’s on the PC and there are better options.

The Long Early Access (is over)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/305620/The_Long_Dark/

  • Needs more Canada.
    • Needs more narrator from Kona
  • They’ve released the first two episodes of their story mode, with more to come down the road
  • Oh, hey! Story mode, I might actually play it for that.
  • I played through all of the Story mode in Planet Explorers so it’s only fair I attempt to give this one the same treatment.

Stardew Valley Multiplayer
http://steamcommunity.com/app/413150/discussions/0/133258593384890132/
http://stardewvalley.net/stardew-valley-multiplayer-news/

  • This is a game where, if you give a certain character a jar of mayo every day, they will fall in love with you
  • Now you can give mayo to your friends. Eventually. No expected release date for MP
  • Seems like the PC version is based off of Flibit’s network code. But how will you progress if you can’t beat up your farmhands?

Montezuma’s (turn based) revenge
http://store.steampowered.com/app/244750/Aztez/

  • A stylized beat’emup with a cool looking aesthetic
  • It has a total-war style zoom out and manage mode as well
  • I would have been happier with Montezuma’s Return getting a port.

Gone Home to Tacoma
http://steamcommunity.com/app/343860/discussions/0/1458455461499293622/

  • Fullbright definitely knows how to build an atmosphere
  • Hopefully they’ve learned to use that atmosphere to funnel you towards a compelling ending
  • This is more of an explorative visual novel than a game though.
    • So it’s exactly the kind of “interactive experience” you’d expect from the Gone Home people.

Hollow Knight ‘Hidden Dreams
http://steamcommunity.com/app/367520/discussions/0/1471967615840530914/

  • Oh how I love a good Metroidvania with-hints-of-Dark-Souls.
  • Hidden Dreams is the first of 3 free content packs for Hollow Knight.
  • Fixed the achievement bug.
  • 2 new bosses and a Stag station.
  • Added the ability to set up Fargates Dreamgates.

News:

OpenGL 4.6 with SPIR-V Support
https://www.khronos.org/news/press/khronos-releases-opengl-4.6-with-spir-v-support

  • Thiis should definitely simplify openGL to vulkan conversions, but I’m not 100% sure how cross compatible the shaders are between GL and VK
  • There are also some parallelization calls to help take advantage of mult-core architectures
  • The really cool thing is thanks to the open sourcing of some of the validation mechanisms, we should see 4.6 support land in MESA much faster than before

And the driver to go with it
https://developer.nvidia.com/opengl-driver

  • Not 100% production ready, but good enough to start messing around with some of the 4.6 features
  • Wait, so Fermi (4XX and 5XX) cards get OpenGL 4.6 and SPIR-V but no Vulkan?
  • Someone ELI5 that one for me?
    • It’s just the shader language. There might be some hardware extensions missing, or other such garbage
    • Or maybe it’s just that nvidia doesn’t want to support vulkan on those cards

Cryengine preview 2
https://www.cryengine.com/news/cryengine-54-preview-2

  • It didn’t like my version of cmake.
  • Still, progress.

Dolphin shade
https://dolphin-emu.org/blog/2017/07/30/ubershaders/

  • Once again the dolphin folks are back doing shit that basically every open source project should be doing: Documenting their trials and tribulations
  • This case, they’re trying to remove shader compilation stutter, a problem that’s been plaguing them from the beginning
  • It’s funny, because this is only a problem because the emulator is good enough now that it’s one of the few remaining issues
  • The solution they’ve devised is pretty mental. Write a shader interpreter to emulate the flipper GPU, on the GPU
  • It’s a pretty massive performance drain though, so they’ve come up with a midway. Most shaders will be compiled via the ubershader, but they’ll asynchronously compile some as well, so they’ll just pop in when they’re ready.
  • They have some guidelines for which modes to use on which operating system using which graphics stack
    • On that note, radv looks pretty good and behaves on par with the blob AMD VK driver
  • It also seems Nvidia’s lack of co-operation with non paying entities is holding the dolphin guys back some as well

SingleMW 0.42
https://openmw.org/2017/openmw-0-42-0-released/

  • Static distant land. Distant objects and creatures would need more work.
  • Outside of any outstanding bugs getting in the way, it’s fully playable.

PSexy3 Progress (of the week)
https://rpcs3.net/blog/2017/08/03/progress-report-july-2017/

  • The flakpaks snaps are now available for public consumption after some LLVM issues have been sorted
  • More games have gone from unplayable to playable including Kingdom Hearts and the Yakuza series
  • Goddamn psychpaths
  • Okay, since they’re getting all those games going I have a few requests:
    • GTA V
    • The Last of Us
      • That would get me to install and buy a copy.
    • Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2
    • NIER
    • Journey
    • MGS 4 and Ground Zeroes
    • Zone of the Enders Remastered
  • Resident Evil 4 is still turbo slow regardless of OpenGL or Vulkan being used.

RESTful DOOM
https://github.com/jeff-1amstudios/restful-doom/

  • Another point for the clear distinction of computer scientists vs computer engineers
  • Could be interesting for TAS runs of doom

PanzerChasm
https://github.com/Panzerschrek/Chasm-Reverse/tree/feature-gnu-linux-build-fix

  • Reverse engineered Chasm: The Rift a.k.a. Chasm: The Shadow Zone.
  • It was meant to compete with Quake, it didn’t. q

Mandatory Disclosure: N/A

Makes with the working

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Could have told you it was UE3.X by the initial load time alone.
  • Holds a solid 60 @ 1080 for the most part with everything on 11 minus a few drops into the 30’s in certain areas.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • NVME doesn’t help with UE3 shader compile times. No sir

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • It took almost a full minute doing the initial shader compile.
  • Steam needs to get around and start shipping those pre-compiled shaders already.

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIR

  • I’m surprised somebody didn’t get sued because several of the baddies seem to cross the “inspired by” line.
  • That aside, the graphics look passable for an indie title.
  • However, they look like absolute dogshite for a 4 mil indie title.
  • Lifeless.
  • I kinda feel like the voice actors did the best they could with what they had.
  • None of this matters since you will nope the volume after the 3rd or 4th time No. 9 says the exact, same, thing after doing a thing.
  • I wish I could be more detailed but were dealing with repressed memories at this point.

J-CHAIRCHAIR

  • It took me a few listens to figure out that the characters aren’t all voiced by the same actor
  • Seriously, playing this game reminds me of that seinfeld episode where they keep talking about pretzels
  • The graphics are okay. Nothing particularly stunning to write home about.
  • At the end of the day, it’s 2.5d megaman

P-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Given our precarious position in time, since we’re on the edge of the robot revolution, I probably shouldn’t say this but fuck it.
  • I want to punch Call in its stupid robot mouth! Who the hell thought it was a good idea to make the single most annoying and personality-less lolibot character shout every single one of her moves in a mandatory stealth section of the game?
  • Everything about that section is bad, but the fucking repetitive shouting “Jump” “Jump” “barrier” “barrier” in that monotone voice made me genuinely angry.
  • I found myself screaming “Shut up! Shut the fuck up” right back, then I realized the futility of my actions and muted the “voices” audio.
  • Pro-tip: You will find yourself having a much better time when you’re not listening to shit voice-acting coming from a game which got 4 million dollars off of Kickstarter.
  • The graphics look good, for a late PS2 to early PS3 era game.

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Controls are tight.
  • It’s nice to play something that when you cock up it’s your fault.
  • If I had to pick at something it would be the amount of friction Mr. not Mega Man has with the floor.

J-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Ditto on the friction issue
  • By the way, don’t try and play this game with a DS4 controller paired with BPM. It’s pretty spray and pray
  • You can at least rebind everything

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • There are many issues with this game but controls are not one of them.
  • Not once did I feel like I hit a key and it didn’t respond adequately.
  • Though, there are some stupid design decisions which directly conflict with the controls or at least with how you think controls should work. But that… that’s something for the Fun!
