Steam News:

Colour key: Venn Jordan Pedro

That’s a start
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3112692/linux/brokenpromises

  • Looks like Brad left out a few.
    • Carmageddon
      • Unreal 3
        • They do mention that one on the Steam Group thingie.
  • The real burn is the silence from the developers.
  • Maintaining this 10% hope (that something might get released) does more damage than a legit NO, it’s been canceled.
    • *Cough* Mad Max *Cough*
      • Shut up! That’s coming out any day week month now!

BT
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/08/31/bt_at_boiling_point_with_valve_over_patents/

  • Bad publicity is still publicity, right?
  • That’s the only real reason I can see for a company I’d never heard of to target the money printing machine that is VALVe.
    • BT’s been around since the 1800s
      • Yes, Wikipedia told me as much.
  • Something doesn’t sit right with me when a telecom company starts accusing people of patent infringement. Probably some very loosely defined one. Still, this is UK patents, not NA ones, so I’m a bit out of my hedge.
    • They said they were American patents when interviewed by Ars Technica and that is why they chose Delaware to present the suit.
    • Which is bullshit. The reason they’re doing that is because in Delaware patent cases often get settled out of court or ruled in favor of the patentee most of the time.
    • Wow. All of these patents cover basic website, RSS and web chat functionality.
    • Also, I’m pretty sure:
      • relates to a multi-user display system and method for controlling a communal display that includes at least two independent workstations and an interface server for connection to a data network.
      • Covers the X window system. Developed in the 80’s. Or VNC for that matter
    • Is this just testing the waters to see if BT can extort other companies providing web services, or is this a legit grievance? Bet your CSGO skins here and find out!
  • BT tried to sue Prodigy in 2002, saying it had invented hyperlinks and was owed royalties.
  • Beddus patent? Really?

Controlla
http://steamcommunity.com/games/353370/announcements/detail/892098092693507492

  • The take screenshot using the steam button is a nice addition. I hate it when I want to go take a screencap of something in game and I have to find where the keyboard for the TV box is to do it
    • You could already do that, Steam button+RT.
      • Well, excuse me for not wanting to enter the Konami code to take a screenshot
      • To be fair, this update now lets you customize the Steam button shortcuts and add new ones. That you couldn’t do before.
  • You can bust out some power chords too. Or at least have steam respond in a predictable manner when you mash a subset of the buttons on the controller

Smaching
http://boilingsteam.com/thesmachzisnotcompletelydead/

  • Soooo it’s a Win10 luggable?
  • I didn’t think I could want it any less?
  • That’s… impractical.
  • And not just in the physical sense either.
  • Alienware saw exactly how bad an idea it was to release a Windows based box. How do you expect your GameGear-level prototype of nope is going to go?
  • Especially since, apparently, you couldn’t even figure out how to get Steam’s very own On-Screen Keyboard to work?
  • You had to plug in a USB keyboard to your prototype just so you could login!
  • Cut your losses boys. No point feeding into the sunk cost fallacy

September 8th?
http://www.rocketleaguegame.com/news/2016/09/rumbleupdate/

  • I got the game in that bundle a few months back which had it at the $15 level.
  • I’ll believe it when I can actually play it!
    • And if it does in fact come out on the 8th and works reasonably well, I’ll even buy that DeLorean DLC.
  • Also, what kind of shader fuckery did you do to UE3 that you can’t render fucking statues properly?
  • Welp, if the beta does launch I will know exactly how long it takes for me to go from “TAKEMYMONIES!11!” to “meh, I might play around /w it”
  • First game to only “officially” support SteamOS?A games—have gotten a wave of good press by announcing forthcoming support for Linux and SteamOS, which then never materialized.
    • Which is a good thing. As we’ll see in the chairquisition, steam runtime == good

Don’t Cross the Streams Worms
http://steamcommunity.com/app/327030/discussions/0/355043117529975303/

  • This is a great way to shoot oneself in the foot.
  • You limit how many you can actively play with on all platforms and then act all surprised when the game tanks.
    • Get ready for a whole lot of this.
      • Or a whole lotta
        • Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Yarr
http://store.steampowered.com/app/512470/

  • Unity scream of nope.
  • Drops you in-game and says have at.
  • Alt+F4 counts as ‘have at’, right?
  • It’s a crappy Android port!
  • At least it’s F2P on both Android and Steam, unlike many games we’ve unfortunately given undue attention in the past.
  • How come Windward, a game which takes up a whole 50MBs of your SSD, still has better naval combat/sailing physics than this 1GB+ game?

Vanguard
http://steamcommunity.com/games/262150/announcements/detail/586979514873976353

  • WARNING: WINE DETECTED
  • Anime Girl Tekken Tag
  • Tempted to pick it up because fighting.
    • Don’t support WINE “”””ports”””” of seven year old releases.

Hack, Slash & Backstab has also been released
http://store.steampowered.com/app/438910/

  • I keep getting murdered right out of the gate due to being swarmed. I imagine having someone else drawing Aggro helps immensely
  • You could have also got this for dirt cheap with that last humble bumble
  • I like the Munchkin idea of both relying on and competing with your players though
  • Munchkin has the Monopoly effect of destroying friendships BTW

News:

Only $1,999!
http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Processors/Intel-7thGenerationCoreProcessorKabyLakeRevealed

  • These are all the laptop versions of the new arch
  • Looks like it’s skylake with an improved multimedia coprocessor
  • People are saying this is significant because it represents the end of the Tick Tock Development scheme at intel. I just hope they fixed that Math bug. And that the processors aren’t too bendy

Ohnoes
http://seekingalpha.com/article/4003352-amdconfirmationzentroubles

  • There seems to be a lot of confirmation bias in this article.
  • It points to 1 of the 2 tests which Wccftech wrote the story about Zen in Ashes of the Singularity.
  • That first test does indeed show Zen performing below what AMD is claiming, but the second one seems to actually confirm said claims.
  • And nowhere in the article, which I had to login for just to be able to read it all, is that second test mentioned or addressed in any way.
  • I don’t know how Zen is going to perform and given how AMD decided to present the initial test with Blender and not provide the render file nor system specs, it’s probably going to be another disappointment.
  • But writing a highly speculative argument based on two graphs which we know little to nothing about, refusing to address contradictory evidence and trying to pass it off as “Confirmation” of “low performance” is downright disingenuous.

Unified Unity. Hello, I’m the redundancy fairy!
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/unityonlinuxreleasenotesandknownissues.350256/#post-2772944

  • We give Unity a lot of shit, but at least they’re putting the effort in *cough leadwerks cough*
  • Now hopefully we should start seeing more regular releases of the linux version
  • Unity is a tool like any other, it can be used for good or shovelware.

Good luck
https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/the_witcher_3_wild_hunt_native_port_for_linux

  • Remember kids, holding your breath while waiting for something will make it come faster
  • My copy of Witcher 3 will likely forever be collecting dust in my GOG account until Wine starts supporting DX11 Well enough.

WINE 1.9.18
https://www.winehq.org/announce/1.9.18

  • It fixes the ntdll regression which cause some games, like No Man’s Sky, to no longer work.
  • GDI performance improvements and more command stream stuff.
  • They also claim “various improvements” in Joystick support.

OpenGTA
https://github.com/rwengine/openrw/issues/52

  • Building it from sauce gives me the same behavior as before, it still stops right after the shaderless cutscene where your character and 8-Ball escape the prison transport.

OBS clutter
https://github.com/bazukas/obsqtwebkit

  • …So you can make webpages show up directly in obs? Instead of just capturing them? Ok…
    • With the advantage of proper transparency if you want to have those stupid overlays.

YT TOS BS (temp link)
https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/771095033894232064

  • Do they plan on enforcing this with their highly accurate CC system?
  • “Controversial or sensitive subjects” is very loose and nondescript language.
  • They must realize that this effectively kills a bunch of their major channels, right?
  • Or will they be handing out special exceptions to their favourite players?
  • That said, TY does not owe you a living.
  • If you are making a living from YT your jerb is to sell aOr will they be handing out special exceptions to their favourite players?ds.
  • We made it a point to host our own video (at no small cost) from genesis.

Wazzat: The worms are back in their most destructive game yet. With a gorgeous, hand-drawn 2D look, brand new weapons, the introduction of crafting, vehicles and buildings plus the return of some much-loved classic weapons and gameplay, Worms W.M.D is the best worms experience ever.

Disclosure: Team17 sent us the keys.

Makes with the working

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Running LD_LIBRARY_PATH=”” %command% sorted all my issues.
  • It somehow manages to be a bit choppy while scrolling.
  • No Steamy overlay.

J-CHAIR

  • Missing libraries. Go to the game’s directory and run the following after installing zfstream and libcurl
  • ln -sf /usr/lib64/libbz2.so.1 lib/libbz2.so.1.0
  • ln -sf /usr/lib64/libcurl.so.4 lib/libcurl-gnutls.so.4
  • Segfaults after the game starts

P-CHAIR

  • Doesn’t save custom teams.
    • I guess this is because it core dumps on exit.
  • The UI is … flaky at best, borderline unusable at worst.
  • The game will freeze the moment you press a button in game proper, if you have a non-English locale set in your particular flavour of Linux.
  • Go ahead and add a decent amount of buffer underruns for good measure.
  • Just edit ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/WormsWMD/Run.sh and add:
    • export LC_ALL=C
    • export PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60
    • export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=””
  • Before the ./Worms\ … line
  • Keep in mind these edits will be noped the moment the game gets updated.

Shiny / Sounds

V-CHAIRCHAIR

  • It looks like Worms?
  • Well, a darker grittier version of Worms Reloaded and that’s not a bad thing.
  • Each theater of war is hella detailed along with all the WMDs.
  • Animation retains the original charm found in earlier games.
  • The bad rapping level voices made me want to stab my brain-organ with a qtip.
  • Other than that it’s what you would expect from a Worms game.

J-CHAIR

P-CHAIRCHAIR

  • It’s Worms… Right down to the selection of slightly different high pitched utterances.
  • If you’ve played a Worms game before, you know what to expect.
  • Unless you have a non-english locale set, at which point you can’t even see the UI properly.

Total-CHAIRCHAIR

Control

V-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Works OOTB /w the XClone and everything is laid out in logical order.

J-CHAIR

P-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

  • Controls will freeze the game because of the locale issue.
  • That’s not a problem with input itself or even mechanics, it’s a technical problem with the engine, so I can’t really ding it chairs here.
  • It works with the Logitech F310, The Mistress, the SHIELD Controller and just plain keyboard & gerbil.

Total-CHAIRCHAIRCHAIR

FUN

V-CHAIRCHAIR

  • Linux only multiplayer DOA.
  • Single player exists but the AI is content with killing itself when it’s not busy flipping the hell out.
  • So all you get is light training at best and mind numbing boredom at worst.
  • BTW crafting seems a bit useless.
  • The only time i’ve needed it is when the game was like “Hey! You have to craft a thing because reason!”

J-CHAIR

P-CHAIR

  • Again, it’s Worms.
  • You already know whether or not you like this game.
  • The additions to this particular title don’t really seem all that important.
  • Speaking of which, I can imagine what happened during development when deciding on said additions:
    • “What’s the hot new craze in game mechanics nowadays?”
    • “Roguelike elements.”
    • “No, we already have randomly generated maps.”
    • “Crafting”
    • “Genius!”
    • “How do we work that into the game?”
    • “We’ll have players collect bits of the weapons they want to craft in crates”
    • “Won’t that mean most matches will be played all the through without a single crafted weapon ever be created, let alone used?”
    • “… I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you over this massive erection!”
  • Take any Worms game, a 2D one (the 3D ones don’t exist in my book), add crafting, driveable vehicles lifted directly from Metal Slug and turrets, add a nice dose of technical issues and the lack of cross platform multiplayer, what do you get?
  • 1 Chair, that’s what!
