Canceled Valve games

  • 10 bucks for for the doc
  • So that whole HL3 plot leak was in fact a real project, But I’m not sure it was a true “episode 3”.
  • I bought it and it really is just an ebook with the occasional video and slideshow.
  • An eBook you need Media Foundation to read, mind you.
  • Speaking of which…
  • I want to know more about the canceled VR headset.

Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST

  • Pick a branch, any branch!
  • Hoo boy, merging all of this stuff is gonna be super fun.
  • Glad I don’t have to do it
  • Having a slow rolling stable branch which only gets updated when the other branch reaches “stable enough” is a good way to have VALVe lutris some of your stuff.

VKD3D-Proton

  • This project attempts to kick the dx12 support for proton into high gear
  • They’re gonna try and get it as performant and accurate as possible at the expense of not supporting a bunch of older cards and drivers
    • Makes sense since DX12 doesn’t exactly have support for older cards.
      • Proper support goes about as far back as the 600 series of GTX cards and the HD 7000 series, so they could still exclude a fair chunk of in-use GPUs
      • In reality they would only be excluding people trying to play modern games on those GPUs.
  • Might be interesting for those new DX12 Ultimate games the new XBox may bring about.

Steam: New Games

Primal light

  • The Linux version requires no OS
  • It gives me some big Castlevania vibes, with a little bit of megaman tossed in
  • This one actually has level design. It’s pretty rare these days to see new hipster pixel games that don’t do the roguelike thing
  • Made with everyone’s Favourite engine, GODOT.
  • That looks a lot like Blasphemous, maybe Team17 will remember to release the Linux version of that, some time.

Steam: Game Updates

Rip OBS

  • So you can disable it with a flag if you want to record your CSGO matches, but that lowers your trust score
  • You can capture it in windowed mode without the untrusted flag.
  • You should be able to do it in Linux with minimal to no issue.
  • Actually, it’s a complete non-issue in Linux since OBS on Linux doesn’t have a Game source, only a window source.

TF Bots

  • Still trying to shake out the bot infestation.
  • Ya know, the one that’s been an issue for the last several months.
  • So getting a chat ban didn’t mute your voice… That was clever!

Tales of Maj’Eyal 1.7.0 BETA1

  • I accidentally read the subtitle as “Come taste new necromancers”
  • Like most of the updates for this game, it’s mostly game balance stuff, with some bug fixes here and there
  • If you need more stuff for your already stupidly in-depth rogueliking adventure.

News:

Nvidia 450.57

  • It’s the not Beta!
  • No more support for the Nvidia capture card.
  • Yes, they made one.
  • Working fine on this end.

Easy Peasy

  • There is one game out of the ones mentioned which I want to play.
  • The rest will be good to have, along with a bunch of the other ones in Steam already.
  • I’m curious as to what “acceptable frame rates” are

We have a date

  • Juuuuust before x-mas
  • Stores are taking pre orders so they must have something to ship.
  • I’ll believe it when I see it.

BYTEPATH

  • Readme refers you to a reddit thread for linux instructions.
    • Which requires you to patch the source. Love to see it
      • It’s a joke, cuz the engine is love2d. I’ll see myself out

Duke Nukem 64 PC

  • Using the n64 rom for the game assets is a nice touch
  • Rednukem is is mekunder backwards

Cyxx Blues (RTheren)

  • I played the shareware version for many, many hours in the after-school activity club.

Top Linux podcasts

  • Hello everyone listening to us for the first time.
  • Well, you might not be listening but you fkn downloaded some shite.
  • XOXO Cloudflare.

Mandatory Disclosure: Venn got us keys

Venn:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Hope you like fullscreen UHD, cause that and windowed was all I could get.
  • Sooo the aiming mechanic only works on the PS4 and it uses the touchpad.
  • Outside of that you must lean to pew.
  • Get, fucked… and you will.
  • It’s 60+ @ UHD on the 2060 so it at least has that going for it.

Fun?

  • Why the hell am I being punished for squishing scientists?
  • I can make a murder carpet of squished natives and nobody blink an eye.
  • Dimensionally compress one boffin and it’s mission failed. Boo.
  • Bottom line kids, stomping things be fun.
  • There is a bit of strategy to painting the forest red since the innocent natives can be on one of three planes.
  • Left stop, right stop, and GET IT OFF MAH HEAD!
  • You have a nanny oxygen meter that can die in a fire.
  • Standard health meter as well and both can be re upped by calling in a support drone.
  • You pew pew stick has a long cooldown as well to keep ya stompin.
  • There are a few modes to the game but they are little more than texture swaps.
  • If that sounds like a complete and engaging game to you it can be had for $9.99.
  • At the end of the day this only makes me long for Hawken, and a story mode to go with it.
  • Verdict: Walking Simulator

Jordan:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches OOTB
  • Gets something to the tune of 150fps @UHD
  • Controls…well
  • The art is decent for the the price range. The soundtrack is a wee forgetable

Fun?

  • Hoo boy
  • So yeah, this thing, from the introduction it’s made clear that this is basically James Cameron’s Avatar with the serial numbers filed off
  • The controls? Existing steam reviews have some differing opinions
  • Some people really like the super finicky controls, saying that it requires more skill to succeed because you really have to place your shots and master the stompyness
  • I personally find the controls kind of obnoxious. If I want this level of fidelity in a mech game, I probably want one in first person that requiries the Old school mechwarrior Battlestation
  • Pedro’s gonna bring up manuel samuel, but that was a gimmicky joke game. This is not that
  • Like last week, this game has an O2 nanny bar as well that I’m not really a fan of either
  • The story? I dunno, colonizer narratives are a bit passe in 2020. I get that you can change sides mid way through, but I’m not a fan of those kinds of tropes either

Pedro:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • It launches
  • It holds 144 at 2560×1440
  • It looks the part and, while being a bit too loud, also sounds the part.
  • It had everything to pass the makes with the working with flying colours, until I realized you can rebind controls… at all!
  • Fuck you and fuck your game.

Fun?

  • I wasn’t even in game proper and I already didn’t want to play anymore of it.
  • It’s <current year argument>
  • How the fuck do you get off not having rebindable controls?
  • “Oh, but we had a vision for this game and it required that we laid out the controls a certain way!”
  • Couldn’t you have fucking copied those same inputs from WASD to the arrow keys?
  • Games with vastly smaller budgets than yours managed to do it, why didn’t you?
  • The footage you’re looking at was recorded with me playing with the DS4 because that was at least manageable.
  • I’d like to introduce you to my right hand!
  • With a fixed layout and my lack of fingers it meant I had to abuse the auto walk or I couldn’t shoot and lift the right leg at the same time.
  • Had I been allowed to remap buttons, be it on the keyboard or the controller, I could have found a way that this game was at least playable.
  • Manual Samuel did it by not requiring both mouse and keyboard inputs.
  • BE-An Elitist Walking Douche does.
