Steam: News

New Steam client

  • I wish Valve would sort the slow DL speed when IPV6 is enabled.
  • I’ve been living that 20MB /sec lifestyle as of late.
  • Some fossil bits have made it into the steam client
  • Fixed an issue where the Steam Client wouldn’t automatically update or download Proton before launching games through Steam Play
    • You think that’d be a bit of a show stopper, no?\
  • Also some more love for those living that ntfs life
  • This is the roll up of the betas.
  • I can tell you for a fact they haven’t fixed the invisible overlay cursor in Proton.
  • There are two games (not in the whitelist) which I’ve seen it happen in.

SteamEMU open sourced

  • This is good news for those worried about Steam going nope in the distant future.
    • Near future if geldreich is to be believed
  • As the top comment points out, this doesn’t actually crack the DRM.
  • Though I’m sure VALVe is not too keen on the slippery slope it may create

DOTA 2 BOTS

  • But how do they fare against Sarah Connor?
  • Some of the handicapping stuff was interesting. No minion masters cuz the robots can issue commands way faster than humans, and they were only really good with the straightforward fighty types for now
  • Pulling and blocking seems to confuse the AI.

Open sourcing GoldSrc

  • Open saucing goldsrc might be neat.
  • Could result in a couple cool projects
    • And more than a few l33t hacks.
      • OG HL on vulkan maybe?
  • This all stemmed from a change VALVe made to Team Fortress Classic.
  • Some of the things which were handled locally, are now done by the server.
  • One of the proposed solutions was to open sauce the code.
  • And while yes, it would fix this issue and others in the future, there are licensing issues to consider from VALVe’s side.

Proton 4.2-3

  • They added the Mono bits
  • If you still have the sauce you should be moving to FNA anyway but if not, Proton now makes short work of a great deal of XNA games on Steam.
  • This means, in broad strokes, these games is now running on Proton rather than on XNA through Proton.
  • There are still issues with games using Windows Media files and other Microsoft specific stuff, but these are minimal issues considering the brunt of running an XNA game is now all going through Proton.
  • Is this the dream of the “0 second” FNA port? I guarantee some XNA devs think so
  • Spoilers for the news section RE: DXVK. SHH! It’s a secret!
  • I was tempted to test this with the goddamn batman Asylum but that took too much work to get going.
  • Horrific acid trip Killer is Dead now makes /w the working.

News:

DXVK 1.0.3

  • 1.1 let some regression slip through, so they’re doing the old rollback switcheroo
    • They do want folks testing master through, so if you’re brave give it a shot
  • They did fix a bug that could cause state caches to take up all your available drive space if left unchecked
  • Dark Souls Remastered is currently the only one in the series sitting at Silver in ProtonDB, all the others are gold.

Unity Linux editor

  • They’re targeting ubuntu LTSes and Centos 7 for compatibilities sake
    • Probably a good move.
  • Unity Editor for Linux is now in Preview.
  • Bringing the Unity Editor for Linux from experimental into Preview means that they are now on a path to a fully supported version by the end of the year.
  • GNOME? Really?!

Athenaeum(v0.3.0) now available on Flatpak

Zork source code

  • That’s kinda neat, and also a little sad?
  • When they found a tape with the Old Adventure source code, that was written in C. Old C, but at least they could modernize it pretty easily
  • I’m curious how many people can actually still read and write ZIL
    • The internal group in facebook not withstanding
  • Also, this isn’t really “open source”.
  • The original licences of this code still apply
  • I look forward to Zock I, II, and III – The open sauce clone.

Super Tux Kart 1.0

  • No issues.
  • More than 20,000 lines of network related code and 18 months later, online play is a reality
  • Could you lot pretty please get the hell off Sourceforge?
  • Now’s as good a time as any to slap a 1.0 label on it
  • That means it’s up for the chariquisition. Again

Fun section:

Fun?:

  • Venn:
    • At first I was upset that some programmer art puzzle game had the nerve to charge $14.99.
    • Hell, I was still thinking that for the first 15 minutes or so of gameplay.
    • Then I managed to solve the first puzzle by accident.
    • By the second map I had some idea of what was going on.
    • I didn’t, at that point my strat was trying to make the word say baba is win.
    • After that did FK ALL experimentation lead me to become Flag, get win.
    • Oh.
    • Oh my, it’s even worse when you understand the mechanics.
    • Baba is WALL!
    • After the third map I had some understanding of how this game was mocking my intelligence but still managed to finish the first overworld.
    • The big brains on Venn even sorted the first two puzzles of the second overworld… then the game reminded me I was an absolute dipshit.
    • I mean, it handed me a map I poked at for a few minutes and bowed to baba, admitting defeat.
    • Desert island game, this.
  • Jordan
    • This game hurts my brian
    • It basically boils down to a mix of tetris and word logic puzzles
    • I had a blast playing it
    • Something about a really well designed puzzle game gets the ol’ thinker going
    • The rules are simple-ish. The “grammar” can be a little off some times
    • I will say, there does seem to be a bit of a sine wave in terms of puzzle difficulty cuz some of those tough ones are a real noggin’ scratcher
  • Pedro
    • I love it!
    • If I had to point out a thing to change it’s the unexplained mechanics.
    • If we take Stephen’s Sausage Roll as an example, the mechanics there were simple.
    • You cook the sausage and then get your character back to the exact same position it started each level in. That’s it!
    • Here, things are more complex but sometimes things you think would work don’t.
    • It’s overly specific with the order things need to be arranged and sometimes you have to push one of the words into a hazard to make it go away.
    • But outside of that, this is another fine example of what puzzle games should be like!
    • Baba is You gives players the gun and about 10 different kinds of ammunition for it.
    • Then it sits back and watches as people disintegrate their feet worse than the Steam news horse!
