Steam: News

The real switch pro (rtheren)

  • Different models based on storage
  • Amd APU
  • The controller layout is certainly interesting. I guess it works with the big U shape
  • Also squareolas
  • I guess they started funding that suspend/resume project for Linux
  • 800Cad for the 512 model doesn’t get me much else other than the storage
  • This is also the relaunch of steamOS, now improved with a very mature proton that gets new games working within days of release.
  • I guess it also gives valve a hardware target to point developers at
  • I worry about the longevity of this class of system though.
  • I suppose being a laptop gives it also huge backlog of shit to run
  • https://twitter.com/flibitijibibo/status/1415728852945494016?s=20
    • Flibit doesn’t seem to happy about valves proton first approach.
    • That very much is encouraging people to not give him work.
    • But we all saw what having only native games being offered did and how no one else liked it.
    • Yeah, Feral saw the writing on the wall early.
    • Started focusing on Vulkan (switch) Mac, and mobile.
  • SteamOS 3 is based on AARCH!
  • Someone was paying attention to GamerOS/ChimeraOS.
  • 16:10 is a very nice screen ratio.
  • Steam Deck is a PC so you can install third party software and operating systems.
  • 669 grams / 1.47 freedom units.
  • I haven’t had a handheld since my TurboExpress and this does nothing to change that.
  • RIP Steam PI, hello Steam Dick.
  • Not to be confused with the Streamdeck.
  • This announcement wrecked a gang of potential Switch sales.
  • Going to make the hardware survey interesting, aint it.
  • Best alternative name I’ve seen was the Gabe Gear
    • I was partial to new-mad myself
  • On the topic of naming. I ran a little experiment.
  • I put the £4 down for the reservation.
  • I am curious to see if they’re going to reveal an approximation of the number of reservations made.
  • All models use socketed 2230 m.2 modules, even the emmc.
    • Cramming a cheap 1 or 2 tb NVME into the 64gb model might be a sweet deal
    • Hopefully you don’t need new spungers. The page now says “not intended for end-user replacement” so I take that as a sign of “good luck getting into it fuckos, it’s your funeral”
    • Can’t imagine they are making two different boards.
  • Launch number digits https://twitter.com/thexpaw/status/1416102630699454464
  • Have to imagine the base version is being sold at / under cost.

The clones

  • If it gets tracktion, yes.
  • Then again having eleventy versions from different vendors is part of what cocked up Steam Machines.
  • You could make the argument that the Gabe Gear is the clone of the GPDs or the Aya Neo, or that old Razer gaming tablet.
  • Honestly, if this kind of market takes over we might start seeing a new breed of games… and maybe new platforms.
  • It’s clear that people respond to the form factor.
  • Here’s the thing though, I’m really not thinking that other companies are even gonna bother with a linux version, they’ll all just be windows based

Steam client update

  • Roll up of the betas to the stable client.

Steam: New Games

Color Breakers

  • Big kudos to Andres, the dev, for sending us keys.
  • Pain with friends.
  • So what if gang beasts was a drawing game?
  • And hey, online multiplayer.

StarPicker

  • Big kudos to Jean-Rémi, Art Director and Composer, for sending us keys.
  • Are we there yet simulator.
  • Speed lines!
  • If you like the treasure hunting bits from sea of thieves, this game might be for you
  • No online multiplayer per se, but there is a leaderboard for routing times

Splitgate (Ertain)

  • Sy-fy pew pew wit… Portals?
  • That could be interesting, could.
  • 13GB and some Vulkan shaders.
  • Dicked around in the tutorial, it could be fun.
  • I get a vibe of Ballistic Overkill with portals.
    • The visual design certainly gives that impression. That or knock off halo. Hola
  • Cheap as free, but you do have some pay to win options as well

Steam: Game Updates

Auto Tomato

  • Whitelisted game, we get to talk about it.
  • The mouse cursor is no longer displayed when using a game pad controller.”
    • 4 years man, 4 years.
  • It struggles to hit 60 with everything on 11.
  • There’s still a couple of boss fights I want to go back and try.

Streets Of Rage 4 – Mr. X Nightmare

  • It has Linux support despite the Steam page.
  • Can’t get the Vulkan render to work or Mangohud us misreporting it.
  • Brawler roguelite.
  • The new characters are pretty fun. Estelle gets a nice ground pound that I wish I were on the receiving end of
  • There’s an RPG-esque grindy mechanic where you can get alternate moves for the characters, which should at least keep stuff fresh

News:

Linux tag on Twitch

  • After what seems like eleventy years Twitch finally did it.
  • You can now add the Linux tag to your streams.
  • Now we need to start the petition for a Linux category.
  • We legit got a boost Wednesday but that might have been people testing le tag.
  • Searching by tag now makes it a lot easier to find Linux streamers.
  • And let’s just say that’s not a particularly popular tag numbers wise.

Wine launcher

  • Hot switching layouts can be very useful when games don’t make that distinction.
  • And controller support is kind of a must if you want your wine prefix containerization software to play WINE games.

Retro pew pew

  • Plain simple source code to defender
  • Spits out a bunch of rom files you can dump on an old williams board, or just run in MAME because you’re a sane person

Visual

  • Not a game but indie software by an indie gamedev.
  • Having visualization for your code can help with wrapping your head around debugging
  • Drag and Drop C programming on Linux.

Piboy

  • Who needs a Steam Pi when you can have one of these!
  • This is the right amount of mental
  • If you want play games on your raspi at 120×80 on your old GBA over the link cable, Rodrigo got you
  • There’s a breakdown of how it works on the github page. It’s a reminder that people have way too much time on their hands
  • Don’t try it on your gameboy micro
  • Actually getting the GPIO on the PI to talk to the GPIO on the link cable/connector opens a lot of doors!
  • I want to see more completely insane projects making use of that interoperability.

Game: Crash Drive 3
Devel: M2H
Engine: Unity
Price: £14.99 / $19.99 / $22.79

Wazzat: Experience ridiculous fun in this cross-platform multiplayer, free-roaming game! Drive monster trucks, tanks and more amazing vehicles across a huge open world. Level up, play events, earn cash, unlock new cars and discover secrets….

Mandatory Disclosure: Devs sent us keys

Venn:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • It uses Vulkan.
  • It’s Unity.
  • It’s upside down!
  • But hey, the controller works.
  • I had to play with Proton to unflip things.
  • It runs, no chugs at 1080 60 on the 2060… until I got to the forest level and it started eating a bit of poo.

Fun?

  • This is a $20 game but you would think it’s freemium.
  • Like on YT, Twitch etc for free cash.
  • Asking me to rate the game when I go to close it?
  • Get, absolutely, fucked.
  • This is Goat simulator on wheels… on a budget.
  • Not much to it really.
  • Drive around, smash into stuff, explode, jump some ramps.
  • You can buy news cars and travel to new areas.
  • Some of the modes are interesting but they rotate outside of your control.
  • I guess it’s something to pick up and play around with for a few minutes but this is $2 more than Hollow Knight.

Jordan:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Hung on launch at first, but upgrading to the latest nvidia drivers seemed to fix that
  • Lauches ootb, holds 60
  • Dualshock works fine, controls are what you’d expect for these games where you play as racists
  • The visuals are fine. They get the point across

Fun?

  • I fired this game up at 2 in the morning just to dick around and lo and behold people are actually playing this. The HUD shows what platforms they’re on too, so crossplay seems to be working. That deserves some credit
  • So you drive around a bunch. Sometimes the game gives you stuff to do
  • Otherwise it’s tony hawk’s pro demolition derby
  • And that’s kinda it. You can make money to unlock new cars and then upgrade them so that they’re semi-usable, and that’s kinda the core loop
  • You just kinda dick around
  • I can totally see this being a pretty chill hang out game for people who like driving games, but it’s a little too open ended and pointless for me
  • Plus the whole calvinball element of just throwing new games at you in the open world doesn’t really do it for me

Pedro:

Launch/Looks/Sounds/Control

  • Launches out of the box.
  • Holds 144 at 2560×1440
  • It looks fairly similar to the previous one, if I’m honest.
  • DualShock and DualSense only work properly with Steam Input
  • The Xinput controllers all work fine out of the box.

Fun?

  • Yes, it is fun!
  • But it’s a frenetic kind of fun that leaves me a little exhausted mentally after 30 or 40 minutes of playing.
  • You’re also dependent on the random events which get queued up.
  • So if you like the races the most and don’t much care for anything else, it’s going to be a pain to suffer through the others.
  • The maps also feel a little too tiny sometimes, giving the play area a bit of a cramped feeling.
  • But I do like the actual game of stunt RC cars and minigame madness.
  • It’s very much just more of Crash Drive 2 if you liked that game.
